Lawson starting to come into his own

College coaches are starting to put together the must see in the spring lists as the high school schedule begins to wind down nationally. One player worth placing on that list is Houston area forward Kelly Lawson.
The 6-foot-8, 205-pound power forward from Pearland (Texas) certainly fits the bill as sleeper.

Lawson is leading his team in scoring and rebounding and has been dubbed by some Houston area high school basketball mavens as one of the "next" of Division I sleepers.
Ask Lawson for a self scouting report and his reply is simple.
"I can score the basketball," Lawson said.
Lawson is the classic example of a big man that plays inside in high school and can move out to the wing during the AAU season. In a nutshell, Lawson can play inside, outside and shoot the three at the four position.
"I don't really like to show off that much. I'm just a basketball player. I don't really do anything that fancy. I just play the game," the 16-year-old said.
Simple enough.
There has been a steady stream of schools coming in to see Lawson play this year. Florida Atlantic, Tulane, Stephen F. Austin and Nebraska have stopped by a practice or two. Colorado, Oral Roberts and "a bunch of others," Lawson says, are interested.
The class of 2009 prospect said he is looking forward to hitting the AAU circuit this spring.
"That is going to be good because in the last year, I've gotten so much better," Lawson said. "I hope the college coaches can see what I can do now."
His time is coming to do just that.
