Kitchen to the Big East

He will have to get used to the cold weather, but three-star 2006 prospect Derwin Kitchen is headed north to play in the Big East.
"St. John's plays in one of the top conferences in the country," said Kitchen, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound shooting guard at Florida Prep. "They have a good coaching staff and a young team on the rise."

Originally from Jacksonville, Fla., Kitchen was a Florida signee out of the 2005 class before an academic roadblock sent him the prep route. He closely considered in-state schools Miami and Jacksonville before choosing St. John's.
"What threw me off with Miami was Coach Haith's involvement with the North Carolina State job and the Oklahoma job," said Kitchen. "And with Jacksonville, I really like the coaching staff and the style of play, but I am ready to get out of the city. I just need to get used to the cold weather."
Kitchen, who averaged 12 points and 6 assists per game at Florida Prep this year, played a lot of point guard and expects to get some run at the point at St. John's.
"St. John's plans on playing me at the two and the one," he said. "I want to come in and make an impact. Whether I do is on me. It depends on how hard I work this summer and in the fall."
