Kansas among those eyeing Zion Griffin

Four-star Zion Griffin was one of the major stock risers of the summer. Playing for Hoopers Basketball out of Illinois, the 6-foot-5 explosive wing earned offers from several programs throughout the Midwest and around the country.

He recently came out and cut that list of offers down to four schools with Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas and Pittsburgh the schools fortunate to still be in the mix. He’ll be on Illinois State’s campus this week and has visits set for the other three programs during September.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Griffin broke down his leaders.

Kansas: “Kansas is my biggest offer and it took me by surprise. I feel like Bill Self and Coach (Jerrance) Howard really want me there.”

Illinois State: “I have a really good relationship with the coaches. They have put a lot of time into recruiting me. Me and my mom like them a lot.”

Iowa State: “The academics and I really like the coaching staff. Those are big factors for me.”

Pittsburgh: “I haven’t seen their campus yet, so I’m wondering what it will be like. I’m sure it will be good because I’ve heard good things. They made me feel like a top priority from when they first started recruiting me and now we talk every day.”

WHAT'S NEXT

Following this weekend’s trip to Illinois State, Griffin has next weekend off before visiting Iowa State, Pittsburgh and Kansas during September. Griffin said he plans on taking all four visits, but didn’t rule out the possibility of ending the process early if one school completely wins him over along the way.

RIVALS REACTION

Kansas always has and probably always will be one of the most feared programs for opposing schools to recruit against. With that in mind and Self showing so much attention to Griffin during July, we’ll call the Jayhawks the team to beat here. But don’t sleep on Iowa State. They were the first school to prioritize him and Steve Prohm has proven to be more than capable of winning a big recruiting battle.
