Jones hoping to find a late spot in a high major 2018 signing class

As an underclassman at Huffman (Birmingham, Al.), Myreon Jones generated some early interest from college basketball programs around the southeast. The 6-foot-3 lead guard continued to develop, but the recruiting interest dropped off throughout his junior year and leading up to his senior year.

Last summer, Jones decided to transfer to Lincoln Academy in Georgia for his senior in hopes of generating some more college interest after a productive summer with the Georgia Stars. Lately, he’s talked to coaches from Memphis, Georgia, Wofford, Murray State, Fordham, Colorado State and South Alabama.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Jones shared his thought on Georgia and Memphis, and his contact with his home state’s schools.

Georgia: “I think they have had an alright season. I feel like they might need help at the point guard spot and in the backcourt, and I think I could do that.”

Memphis: “I’ve seen a few games. I like the way they play. I know Tubby Smith is a great coach and won a championship at Kentucky and then went to Minnesota and Texas Tech.”

Alabama/UAB: “Alabama was on me a little bit early, but then I haven’t heard from them. UAB was on me for a while too.”

IN HIS COACH'S WORDS

“Myreon is the real deal and one of the most complete players I’ve ever coached when it comes to everything it takes to be a successful college basketball player. As a student, he excels in the classroom, and he’s a standup teammate and exemplary role model.

"When it comes to the court, everyone knows what kind of scorer he is but I think one of the things that has impressed me most was his passing ability. He has really grown as a defender. He’s a fierce competitor out there as a leader and point guard. That’s what you want your teammates to see, but he’s also not afraid to chew a teammate out when he needs to. As a coach, he’s everything you can want in a player. He’s going to make somebody really happy.”

RIVALS REACTION

While it’s understandable that he’s not a slam dunk high-major prospect, it’s a bit surprising that more schools haven’t joined the mix for Jones. He’s had a really good year for Lincoln Academy and was really good for the most part with the Georgia Stars last summer. He has good size for a guard and can play either backcourt spot because of his versatility.

It could end up being a scenario where he could wait until April or May and a school has a spot open up when a player transfers. Jones says he wants to get his recruitment out of the way as soon as possible, but it also sounds like his goal is to play at the highest level. He could be a surprisingly good late addition for somebody.
