Johnson County CC Shootout recap

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- According to the good old folks at the NCAA, college coaches cannot watch high school teams in tournaments or shootouts outside of the regular season. However, those coaches can watch junior college teams, and because of that, October is a huge month for junior college teams as they travel to regional showcases. Sunday, several area teams were on hand at Johnson County Community College for the Johnson Shootout.

Johnson Shootout notables

Tyrus McGee, SG, Cowley County- Committed to Iowa State, McGee is the proud owner of an accurate jump shot and deep range. He doesn't need much of a look at the hoop and it's impressive how quickly he gets squared, sets his feet and gets a jumper off. He uses fakes effectively to get defenders in the air allowing him to drive by. He's a competitor and a leader, but looks to be more of a shooting guard than a point guard.

Jarmar Gulley, SF, Highland CC- Simply because of his in your face, relentless and tough style of play, Gulley is going to earn some admirers. A very strong and athletic 6-foot-4 wing, he will get to the rim and finish against just about everybody. He forces his teammates to be more aggressive

Quantel Denson, PF, Hutchinson CC- At 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, the product of Grandview, Mo. on the southern edge of Kansas City is likely one of the more promising freshman juco bigs. He's a fluid athlete, has a great frame, has good hands and can really run the floor. He hit some pick and pop jumpers, got to the line, finished above the rim and showed impressive flashes. He's still a bit raw and has to keep his energy level up when his guards don't get him the ball.

Dennis Tinnon, PF, Kansas City, KS CC- Marshall got a good one in Tinnon. A tough as nails 6-foot-7 power forward, he's very quick off the floor and has great length. He runs the floor, contests shots and goes after rebounds in and out of his area. The sophomore looks like a guy who is capable of helping out the Thundering Herd as soon as he gets to campus.

Daveon Boardingham, PF, Seward County- A rugged, tough and pretty athletic 6-foot-6 four man from Newark, N.J., Boardingham was active in the paint. He got on the glass, scored through contact and turned into a scrum around the rim. He showed some touch to between 8 and 10 feet and is a freshman at Seward.

Torres Roundtree, SG, State Fair CC- A former division player at Southern Illinois, the St. Louis native remains very dangerous attacking off the dribble along the baseline. He ran the point for some stretches and was effective. When everything breaks down, he's a guy who can go get one on one buckets.

De'Ontae Hooks, PG/SG, Hutchinson CC- A freshman combo guard from Kansas City, Hooks has a lot of upside. He's very fluid with the ball and can make good things happen for himself and others off the dribble. He's a natural scorer, good passer and will go either direction. As he adds strength and gets a little tighter with the ball, he could develop into one of the better Jayhawk Conference guards.

Mohamed Fall, C/PF, Cloud County- The 6-foot-8 sophomore isn't going to blow you away with his skill level, but the native of Senegal plays like a full-grown man in the paint. He dishes out physical punishment, is a good athlete and protects the rim.

Vincent Dillard, SG, Colby County- A 6-foot-4 lefty wing from the Orlando area, Dillard showed some promise as a transition athlete, creator and spot-up scorer. He's very fluid with the ball, can create space for jumpers off of the dribble and is a good passer. His jumper is a bit erratic, but he's got some upside to him.

6-foot-5 inch freshman power forward Courtney Jones is a little undersized at the four. However, the Johnson County Community College insider is strong and a fine athlete. … Another JCCC freshman who is intriguing is 6-foot-7 power forward Melvin Turner. He needs a ton of strength and has to fight through contact better. But, he can run as well as any big man around, is very agile and has pretty good overall skill. … Freshman Markee Mazyck of Seward County is a strong, athletic and tough kid who likes to attack the rim. He's got wing size at 6-foot-4, but the D.C. native is built like a linebacker which makes him a unique matchup. … Cloud County freshman Alex Williams came close to walking on at Kansas State last spring. A skinny 6-foot-7 power forward, Williams would have been a pretty good walkon. He's long, runs the floor, gets to the rim for dunks and blocks some shots. He'll surely have some options opening up for him. … Corey Billingslea is another freshman from Florida at Colby County who has division one potential. A wiry strong 6-foot-6 combo forward, he runs the floor, can go off the dribble and is a very bouncy finisher around the rim. …

Hutchinson CC sophomore Joe Mitchell definitely has the frame to enable him to play at Ohio. A 6-foot-1 shooting guard, Mitchell is strong and wired to score. Sunday, though, he struggled with his jumper and with running the point for stretches. … Among the programs who were in town to watch Sunday's action were Iowa State, Utah, Oral Roberts, Missouri State, Wichita State, UMKC, Creighton, Liberty, Georgia State, Northern Arizona, and Central Arkansas. …
