In just their first season playing in the Nike EYBL, Elfrid Payton Elite qualified for the EYBL Finals at the Peach Jam in large part due to the play of point guard DeJon Jarreau. The long, athletic lead guard handled both ball handling and scoring duties at different times and did so at a high level.
Creighton, Texas, Oklahoma State, Miami, Boston College, UMass, Memphis, Florida, Tulsa and Mississippi State have taken notice of his ability in the past few months. His most recent offer comes from the new staff at Texas, and it's an offer that intrigues the four-star prospect.
"They are good. I like them a lot," said the class of 2016 New Orleans native. "They run a lot and they run a lot of pick-and-roll. Coach Smart and his staff are really good. They do a great job."
Mike White brought his whole staff with him when he left Louisiana Tech for Florida a few weeks ago, so there is some familiarity for Jarreau with the new staff in Gainesville.
"They are good too. They just started hitting me up since they got there. They were recruiting me at Louisiana Tech, too. I know he can help me turn into a good player."
Creighton head coach Greg McDermott personally extended a scholarship offer to Jarreau after watching him during the recruiting periods in April.
"They are very good. The head coach there watched me and offered me, so I've been talking to them a lot. I like them a lot too."
Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford, a former point guard at Kentucky, has a reputation as being a coach that can develop point guards, and that's not lost on Jarreau.
"They run a lot iso and pick and roll too. They run a lot. Coach Ford is a great coach. He knows how to develop point guards."
Jarreau says Memphis has been the school recruiting him the hardest at this point, and it has been head coach Josh Pastner carrying the weight for the Tigers staff.
"I know they are going to work you hard and run a lot. That's a good program. I talk to Coach Pastner a lot. He's cool. He calls me and keeps it real."
Don't look for a decision too soon for Jarreau.
"I'll probably commit during the high school season. I want to go somewhere that has a good program in sports management and plays my style, which is a lot of pick-and-roll and where they run a lot. I'm pretty wide open with all the schools right now."
