Frank Martin has built his South Carolina program based off the talent that its own state can produce which is why his latest recruiting win should come as no surprise. Three-star guard Jacobi Wright, a good sized, giant playmaker, is now off the board thanks to his verbal commitment to the in-state program.

“They check all the boxes for me: I get to represent my state and get to have my family’s name on my back. That means a lot,” Wright told Rivals.com. “I will get pushed hard by the coaching staff and I want to be pushed to my limit. After going to multiple practices and games, I know for a fact that this coaching staff and the players around me will do that.”

Wright is a quality pick-up for South Carolina. The primary playmaker for the nationally ranked Legacy Early College program heading into the fall, Wright is rated as the 33rd best lead guard in America. He chose the Gamecocks over USF, Virginia Tech, and Winthrop. His is valued most for his cerebral abilities at the point of attack, facilitating prowess and size along the perimeter.

“Being from South Carolina, I feel like the hoops here is undervalued and underrated. Being from the state and able to rep the university will make it all that much better to be able to win with that name across my chest,” Wright went on to say. “I will be able to show people that a kid from South Carolina playing for South Carolina can make some noise.”

USC is expected to lose Justin Minaya and AJ Lawson after next season and has already found capable replacements for each. Wright joins Devin Carter, another three-star guard that decided to take a prep year in the fall, as South Carolina commits from the 2021 class. A versatile wing or forward could be the next priority for the SEC program.
