College coaches were finally allowed to get back on the road to see their top targets last Wednesday, and Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, Texas, has been a popular spot for coaches recruiting in the Lone Star State.
Four-star point guard Jay Jay Chandler had a big summer with Houston Hoops and has attracted attention from Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, New Mexico, TCU, Houston and Michigan. He's already taken visits to Virginia Tech and Texas A&M with more coming down the road.
Chandler's trip to Blacksburg coincided with the Hokies' Monday night football season-opener against Ohio State.
"It was nice. It was good to be up there," Chandler said. "It was good to see the environment on the campus. Coach Buzz (Williams) is cool. I talked to the players and they said he's a really good coach and lets you play."
Chandler had been to Texas A&M before, but wanted another chance to get to know coach Billy Kennedy and his staff.
"The students and everybody around the school are great. I talked to some of the players and all the coaches were real nice."
Shaka Smart is also trying to make some headway with Chandler early in the process.
"Texas is improving since last year. Coach Smart has come in and done a good job. I think I'm going up there sometime soon."
Baylor was one of the first schools to see Chandler this month, and they plan to be back soon.
"Baylor is really good. I like their style of play a lot. I think that fits the way I play. Coach (Scott) Drew, I talk to him a lot. They are coming back down to see me again soon."
Houston is working hard to keep the top local talent home as they build their program up. Chandler sees Kelvin Sampson's program as a good fit for the way he plays.
"I like the way they play too. I went to a few of their games last year, so I got to see how they play. Now they have this good recruiting class coming in with Galen Robinson and Damyean Dotson, two players I used to play with when I was younger. I can fit into their style of play there."
Chandler says he hopes to make a decision on where he'll attend college sometime after travel season ends next summer.
