Interest Builds For Matthews

Wesley Matthews, a 6'3'', 170 pound shooting guard from Monsignor McClancy High School in the Elmhurst section of Queens, NY, has generated interest from a number of low and mid level Division I schools as the summer winds down.
Matthews has fielded serious interest Hofstra, Albany, Central Connecticut, and LIU, as well as interest from Towson, Rider, and Quinnipiac. Albany has offered, and Hofstra and Central Connecticut may be close to extending a grant-in-aid.

Wes plans on visiting Hofstra, Albany, and Central Connecticut this fall.
Matthews competed with The New York Elite this summer, and was one of the reasons that the Elite, coached by Chris Phillips and Erik Jaklitsch, were able to capture the Three Stripes Tournament title at Hofstra in July.
Wes told Rivals Hoops that he will be competing with Riverside Church this fall. He plans on attending The Gaucho Roundball Classic during the first week of September, The Riverside Tournament September 21st and 22nd, also in New York City, and he may attend The Five Star Tourney being held at Drexel University in Philadelphia September 13, 14, and 15 with The Church. Matthews will also participate in the CHSAA Senior Showcase this fall.
Matthews brings good size to the wing, and his frame should enable him to pack on some more muscle to his frame. He does a pretty good job of getting in the lane and finishing in traffic, equipped with good body control. Wes is capable of chipping in on the glass from the wing. He impressed Rivals Hoops at The IS8 League in Queens in the spring with his court awareness. Matthews has good mechanics on his jumper, but needs to be more consistent from the outside.
Matthews was the top junior scorer in the New York City Catholic League last year at McClancy at 18 points per game. His class is a formidable one that includes Chris Taft from Xaverian, Marlon Smith from Molloy, Daon Merritt, Louie McCroskey and Tariq Atkins from St. Raymond's, Japhet McNeil, Mitchell Beauford, and Justin Marshall from Christ The King, and Kojo Mensah and Kirk Bunn from Bishop Loughlin.
Wes carries an 80 average in the classroom. He will take the SAT for the first time in October.
