When senior shooting guard Cullen VanLeer saw that Missouri's Kim Anderson was calling on Friday he wasn't sure what to expect.
During the phone call, Anderson offered the 6-foot-4 sharp shooter from Pacific (Mo.) High a scholarship. The offer caught the three-star prospect off guard for a little bit but once it sunk in, VanLeer wasted little time accepting.
"The offer came this morning," VanLeer told Rivals.com. "I wasn't really ready for it. When it happened
I was kind of speechless but once I realized it was real, I knew that is where I wanted to be at.
"Being in state and being a Missouri kid, I feel like I should want to represent my state and it is the big school of the state."
A good sized shooting guard who is developing his ball handling to slide over and play some point if needed, VanLeer's biggest weapon is his shooting. The Tigers feel his ability to stretch the floor will really open things up and he feels like he can help in other ways too.
"We didn't really talk about why they liked me today," said VanLeer. "But I know they really like my shooting ability and the way I play and present myself on the floor with an all together game.
"I'm pretty sure my shooting is my SEC-ready skill. I need to keep working on my quickness and athleticism for getting ready. I definitely feel like I'm ready for it I've been working my butt off and I'm ready to test myself."
A member of the St. Louis Gateway program, VanLeer always felt that if he put in the work he would be rewarded. Now that it is happened and he is headed to Mizzou, he's ready for a strong senior season.
"It's a big thing," said VanLeeer. "Coaches go out and find the players that they want. It doesn't matter the brand of team you play for, coaches will find you if you can play.
"It's definitely a little bit of a shock phase right now. I'm taking it all in and all the congratulations I'm getting show how much people care. Now I'm ready for a big senior season and after that I'll be ready to get better for Mizzou."
