Illinois forward playing strong

Chris Cornelius, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound forward, was very close to going back to his home state of Illinois for college hoops after finishing his post graduate season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. But the early signing period has passed by and he’s still open.
Cornelius was very close to committing to Illinois State but the school said they wanted to evaluate him during his season at Brewster. The decision to wait may have opened the door to some bigger schools.

At the CSG National Prep Showcase, Cornelius scored 19 points against a loaded Laurinburg squad. His free throws with three seconds to play against Coastal Christian helped seal a one-point victory. Needless to say, he’s playing well enough for schools to take a much closer look at the unsigned class of 2005 player.
“After we went to New Jersey, things started to really pick up,” Cornelius said.
Marquette, SMU, Marshall, LaSalle and Davidson began to come into the picture. Cornelius said Davidson offered him a scholarship after watching him play on Wednesday night. William and Mary and Loyola-Chicago have also tendered free rides. And Illinois State, he hasn’t rule them out either.
“They are still right there and my number one school but I’d like to get some more feedback from Marquette. It’s an interesting situation there. I haven’t heard from Illinois State for a couple of weeks. Basically, since I opened it back up again.”
Cornelius’s game has improved since moving to New Hampshire, too. The rugged, blue-collar player has improved his perimeter skills and has improved under the basket as well.
“Going from high school to this year has really helped me a lot,” Cornelius said. “I’m more mature, a better student and just better in general. It’s tough but it’s been worth it because I get to practice against guys like Jeff (Adrien) and Chad (Millard). Jeff is a warrior and watching Chad and guarding him on the perimeter has helped me. I’m comfortable guarding both.
“I’m comfortable playing both (forward) spots, too. I’m more of a spot up shooter and more comfortable playing the three full time but for now playing the four and playing inside is alright with me.”
