Huskies Pick Up Prep School Scorer Smith

Joel Smith, the explosive 6-4, 205 pound shooting guard/swingman from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., has committed to Washington.
A native of Lompoc, Calif., Smith took an unofficial visit to Washington last week along with his father, according to Brewster Head Coach Jason Smith.

"It's a great fit for Joel," Smith said. "He wanted to get back to the West Coast to play in the Pac 10. Washington was the first Pac 10 school to show serious interest and they sustained it throughout the year."
Smith picked the Huskies after being looked at by Marquette, DePaul, Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Loyola Marymount.
He averaged 14 points and six rebounds per game this past season as a junior at Brewster.
"Joel is an explosive athlete," Coach Smith note. "His mental toughness is by far and away above his peers at this point in his career. He's extremely coachable and has a desire to work and improve on his weaknesses."
Smith will return to the New England prep stalwart in the fall for his senior campaign. According to Coach Smith, he will need to tweak a few aspects of his game for the PAC 10 level.
"Joel needs to tighten up his ball handling and decision making to become a two at the next level," he said.
He is expected to spend this summer playing with the L.A. Rockfish traveling program. RivalsHoops.com will be at several events this summer that Smith will attend, so we'll keep an eye on his progress as the evaluation period looms.
