Hoophall Classic: Another win for Gilchrist

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - A couple top five wing prospects went to battle Monday at the Spalding Hoophall Classic. Both Mike Gilchrist and Shabazz Muhammad had impressive outings, but Gilchrist's St. Patrick's team came away with the victory.

St. Patrick 79, Bishop Gorman 63

In a hotly contested game, St. Patrick won all four quarters to pull off the double-digit win. The trio of Mike Gilchrist, Derrick Gordon and Chris Martin was too much for Bishop Gorman and its underclass duo of Shabazz Muhammad and Rosco Allen.

Mike Gilchrist 2011, forward, St. Patrick, Kentucky signee

It was a typical outing for Gilchrist - high energy and high production. He has a maturity to his game that allows him to be just as effective as the lead man and also a support guy. This ability to move between roles will serve him quite well as he moves into high levels of play. Against Bishop Gorman, Gilchrist went for 27 points on 9-of-19 shooting, 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 8-of-9 from the line, 10 rebounds, two blocks, two steaks, two assists and three turnovers.

Derrick Gordon 2011, combo guard, St. Patrick, Western Kentucky signee

Gordon scored a lot of points, but most impressive was his first half defense on Muhammad, holding him to five points. Muhammad broke loose in the second half, but Gordon has solidified his promise as both a dynamic scorer and defender at Western Kentucky. He finished with 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting, 0-of-2 from behind the arc, 4-of-5 from the line, five rebounds, two steals, two assists and two turnovers.

Chris Martin 2011, combo guard, St. Patrick

Martin is a deadly clutch shooter and played that role against Bishop Gorman before taking a hard foul on a dunk attempt and being knocked out of the game. Up to that point, Martin was 7-of-13, 4-of-7 from three for 18 points and had four rebounds.

Shabazz Muhammad 2012, wing, Bishop Gorman

Muhammad got loose in transition during the second half and the rest of his offensive game quickly fell into place. Muhammad scored a variety of ways on the way to being the game high scorer with 28 points. He was 10-of-22 from the field, 2-of-5 from behind the arc and 6-of-6 from the line. He also grabbed six rebounds.

Rosco Allen 2012, forward, Bishop Gorman

Allen is at his best when shooting the ball from the outside. This was the case on Monday. Allen went 3-of-6 from behind the arc, 4-of-11 total from the field and made 2-of-2 free throws. He also tallied five rebounds, two blocks, one steal, four assists and six turnovers.

Findlay College Prep 68, Dallas Lincoln 59

Dallas Lincoln hung for a half, but the overall talent of Findlay Prep was just too much for LeBryan Nash and his crew.

Myck Kabongo 2011, point guard, Findlay Prep, Texas signee

Kabongo played another stellar game for Findlay Prep in this event. In this one he still dished out 10 assists to five turnovers, but he also was more aggressive as a scorer. He hit for 14 points on 6-of-13 from the field and 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Kabongo also had six rebounds and five steals.

Nick Johnson 2011, shooting guard, Findlay Prep, Arizona signee

Johnson did a nice job defensively picking up Nash early in transition and sticking to him. Johnson also led his team in scoring with 19 points on 5-of-13 shooting, 4-of-8 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the line while also grabbing four rebounds.

Winston Shepard2012, forward, Findlay Prep

Shepard played a second high energy game at this event. Against Lincoln he grabbed 13 rebounds while snagging 15 in the earlier game. He also added some offensive play Monday, scoring 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and dishing out three assists to one turnover.

LeBryan Nash 2011, forward, Dallas Lincoln, Oklahoma State signee

Nash spearheaded a successful first half attack for Lincoln, but in the second half he appeared to fatigue and struggled to knock down shots. His extreme talent was evident at times but then there were also times when it faded. On the game he was 6-of-19 from the field, 1-of-6 from behind the arc and 10-of-10 from the line. He also had eight rebounds, two blocks, two steals, two assists and eight turnovers.

Keaton Miles 2011, forward, Dallas Lincoln, West Virginia signee

Miles always puts forth a strong effort and today was no different. He tied for game high rebounder with 13 boards and also worked his way to 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Boys and Girls High School 47, Academy of the New Church 45

Down 14 going into the fourth quarter, Boys and Girls mounted a furious comeback behind the strong play of Malik Nichols to force an overtime period. Point guard Antione Slaughter had only made one shot prior to his game winning floater with two seconds left on the clock in overtime.

Savon Goodman 2012, forward, Academy of the New Church, Villanova commitment

Of the prospects of note, Goodman was the only one with a performance worth noting. A strong athlete who plays an aggressive style, Goodman was the game high scorer and his team's only double digit scorer with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting and 4-of-6 from the line. He was also game high rebounder and his team's only double digit rebounder with 16 boards. The one downside to his game was his five turnovers without an assist.

St. John's Prep 62, Perspectives Charter 53

St. John's Prep turned the tables on Anthony Davis and Perspectives Charter in the second half. Down nine at half, Patrick Connaughton and Steve Haladyna turned it on, guiding St. John's Prep to a nine point victory.

Patrick Connaughton 2011, wing, St. John's Prep, Notre Dame signee

A hardnosed competitor, Connaughton hit the boards for a team high 13 rebounds. He only had four points at half and never completely found his touch, but he did hit two critical three-of-pointers when St. John's Prep broke it open down the stretch. Connaughton scored 19 points on 6-of-21 shooting, 2-of-13 from three, 5-of-7 from the line. He also had five steals, three blocks, two assists and five turnovers.

Steve Haladyna 2012, wing, St. John's Prep

Working primarily along the baseline against Perspectives Charter's zone defense, Haladyna was the lead scorer for St. John's with 25 points on 9-of-20 shooting, 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 6-of-9 from the line. He also had six rebounds and three steals.

Anthony Davis 2011, forward, Perspectives Charter, Kentucky signee

Davis does it all for his team as point guard, wing scorer and low post presence all in one. Simply put, he has a freakish combination of length and skill level. He also is becoming a more aggressive player with his defensive play and board work. Davis finished with 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting, 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 5-of-10 from the line, 16 rebounds, seven blocks, two steals, one assist and eight turnovers.

Christ the King 73, Westchester Country Day 65

Christ the King used a stingy defense and dominant rebounding to control this game from start to finish.

Omar Calhoun 2012, wing, Christ the King

His game isn't flashy, but Calhoun is a solid wing prospect who makes a multitude of plays in an efficient manner. His stat line from Monday speaks to this versatility. Calhoun registered a game high 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting, 4-of-8 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the line, 10 rebounds, one block, six assists and five turnovers.

Isaiah Lewis 2013, wing, Christ the King

Lewis has nice length and athleticism for a young perimeter prospect. He attacked the basket with confidence and made plays as a scorer and passer off the dribble. Lewis finished with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 1-of-2 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 at the line. He also had four rebounds, five assists and five turnovers.

Deuce Bello 2011, wing, Westchester Country Day, Baylor signee

Bello had a nice game attacking the basket off the dribble in a variety of ways. He is one of the most athletic players in the class, and it is a frightening thing to consider if his skill game catches up with his athleticism. Currently Bello is making progress in that direction. He had a team high 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting, 3-of-9 from behind the arc but 1-of-6 from the line, five rebounds, three steals, one block, three assists and three turnovers.

Josh Level 2014, forward, Westchester Country Day

Level is a promising young prospect. He's a strong athlete who plays with a good motor. At around 6-of-foot-of-5, Level will need to grow some or improve his perimeter skills, but the prospect of that happening looks good. Level scored 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting, 1-of-7 from behind the arc and 1-of-4 from the line, and he grabbed six rebounds.
