Hoopfest: Saturday

BENTON, Ky.- Saturday's action stretched into Sunday at the Bill Keightley Marshall County Hoopfest. The highlight of the long day of basketball was the thrilling Duncanville (Texas) High comeback for an overtime win over Kentucky's Scott Co. High School behind the one-two punch of Roger Franklin and Julian Washburn.

Scott Co. controlled the game against Duncanville until midway through the fourth quarter when Shawn Williams fouled out. At that point Roger Franklin took over the game with his energy and scoring while Julian Washburn followed suit. Washburn's scoring and rebounding was pivotal during Duncanville's comeback and overtime dominance.
Julian Washburn- The athletic 2010 combo forward has struggled with consistency in his play, but on Saturday Washburn was solid throughout the game and then outstanding down the stretch. On 9-15 shooting he scored a team high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The vast majority of baskets were on moves towards the basket where he used his length to score over the less athletic Scott Co. frontline.
Washburn noted that Texas A&M and Texas are recruiting him the hardest and that he also has offers from Kansas and USC. UCLA, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arizona and Arizona State are also in the picture.
Roger Franklin- Franklin bounced back from a subpar game Friday, putting his team on his back during the fourth quarter when he began to attack the basket off the dribble rather than settling for jumpers. He scored 17 points on 7-18 shooting while also grabbing 13 rebounds.
Dakotah Euton- A 2010 Kentucky commitment, Euton hit some big shots in the first half to give Scott Co. its lead. On the night he shot 5-13, 3-8 from three for 15 points while also grinding out 16 rebounds.
Chad Jackson- Jackson led Scott Co. in scoring with 23 points, getting to the line 18 time for 15 makes with his aggressive drives to the basket. He also turned the ball over six times.
Ge'lawn Guyn- Guyn scored 17 points from the shooting guard position on 6-11 shooting.
Columbus Northland 69, Memphis White Station 55
Jared Sullinger- The elite 2010 bruiser was just too much for the smaller frontline of White Station. Sullinger, an Ohio State commitment, bullied his way to 23 points and a plethora of rebounds. But Sullinger didn't just operate in the paint. During practically the whole fourth quarter, Sullinger was the primary ball handler operating successfully out around half court. Expect Sullinger to have as big an impact on the college game his first year as any freshman in the country.
J.D. Weatherspoon- The Xavier commitment made a huge imprint on the game with his electric athleticism and non-stop motor. He battled on the boards and scored 21 points to boot.
Joe Jackson- The Memphis speedster never got completely untracked, but he did manage a team high 18 points. At times he passed the ball well, but White Station as a whole had troubles finishing around the rim.
Ferrakohn Hall- Hall battled against Sullinger, but in the end Sullinger was just too strong. After a subpar summer, Hall does appear to have his game back on track. He presently claims offers from Missouri, Arkansas, Memphis, UAB and Oklahoma State.
Andre Hollins- A 2011 shooting guard, Hollins is a steady competitor and physical player. High majors are tracking him as he works to expand his game. Saturday Hollins scored 11 points.
St. Benedict's 69, Chicago Whitney Young 55
Tristan Thompson- With Thompson at the lead, the St. Benedict's frontline was just too much for the undersized Whitney Young squad. Thompson matched his scoring total on Friday night with another 18 points on 8-15 shooting.
Myck Kabongo- A 2011 point guard, Kabongo was outstanding managing the game on the offensive end and pressuring the ball on the defensive end. On his way to developing into one of the top point guard recruits in his class, Kabongo scored ten points on 4-9 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and had four assists.
Chris Colvin- The Iowa State signee relentlessly attacked the basket for 14 points on 5-10 shooting. A physical guard who is extremely difficult to keep out of the lane, Colvin also produced eight assists off his penetration. At times out of control, he also turned it over five times.
Marcus Jordan- A bubble high major prospect, Jordan came and went as a factor in the game, but ended up with 12 points on 5-10 shooting.
Sam Thompson- An intriguing 2011 prospect, Thompson had some positive moments in his 15 minutes of play. Along with an impressive block against Tristan Thompson, he scored six points on 2-2 shooting.
Anthony Johnson- The 2010 Purdue commitment never got untracked. He finished with six points on 2-10 shooting.
Jackson Callaway 69, Wheeler 62
The guards beat the post players in this match up. Behind the strong guard play of Deville Smith and Julysses Nobles Callaway overcame Wheeler's inside tandem of Ari Stewart and Richard Howell.
Deville Smith- The super quick sophomore point guard dazzled the crowd with his ball handling and scoring as he went for 24 points on 10-15 shooting, 3-6 from behind the arc. A definite high major prospect, Smith has a number of schools in the southeast recruiting him, including Arkansas who was in the house for his impressive performance.
Julysses Nobles- A senior, Nobles shared ball handling duties with Smith and did a good bit of scoring himself. The physical playmaker scored 28 points on 11-16 shooting, 2-4 from behind the arc.
Ari Stewart- The Wake Forest signee was active and productive as he kept his game tight to the basket along the baseline. He had few negative plays and racked up 18 points on 8-14 shooting including 1-2 from three. He also was a force on the boards.
Richard Howell- A North Carolina State signee, Howell didn't have his typical efficient game from the field, making only 3-11 shots. He did get to the line nine times for six makes, however, and a total of 12 points.
Tahj Tate- An athletic wing and unsigned senior, Tate impressed with his scoring and athletic plays around the basket. A definite mid-major prospect, Tate had a team high 20 points on 8-16 shooting, 2-6 from three.
Findlay 66, Montverde 39
Avery Bradley- The elite shooting guard headed to Texas once again led Findlay in this lopsided affair. Scoring 18 points on 7-16 shooting, 2-4 from three, Bradley was the dominating presence on the court throughout the game.
Cory Joseph- Joseph continues to impress with his steady play at the point guard position. He avoids mistakes, pushes the tempo and makes timely shots. He finished with 14 points on 4-7 shooting, 2-5 from three.
D.J. Richardson- With his future head coach Bruce Weber in attendance, Richardson didn't disappoint. On 5-9 shooting, 1-3 from three, he scored 12 points in a steady effort.
Papa Samba Ndao- The 2010 combo forward was the one bright spot for Montverde. A long athlete with a nice shooting touch, Ndao scored ten points on 4-14 shooting, 2-7 from three.
Oak Hill Academy 58, Chicago Simeon 52
Doron Lamb- Lamb continued his efficient scoring with 13 points on 5-9 shooting, 3-4 from three.
Bryon Allen- Allen led Oak Hill with 14 points on 6-16 shooting, 2-5 from three.
Marshall Co. 75, North Hopkins 57
Jon Hood- Facing a box and one with a defender yelling in his face and an immediate double team whenever he caught the ball, Hood still managed 30 points on 12-27 shooting. He shot poorly off the catch behind the arc, missing all three of his three-point attempts, but the Kentucky signee shot the ball well off the dribble and scored off his five offensive rebounds.
South Laurel 72, Lafayette 68
Tyler Griffey, who has signed with Illinois, scored 20 points on 8-15 shooting in a losing effort but never imposed his will on the game. Playing mainly on the perimeter, Griffey hit 2-4 three-pointers and made some midrange shots off the dribble. His success at Illinois will largely be predicated on whether he builds his body up to where he can bang on the inside and then also utilize his ability to knock down shots from behind the arc.
