A 6-foot-7 junior power forward at Tarboro (N.C.) North Edgecombe, Harrell said the timing made sense.
"It just felt right," Harrell told Rivals.com of his commitment to Virginia Tech. "I've been thinking about it for a few days and it just felt like it was time."
Of course, a recent visit to campus to watch the Hokies knock off then top-ranked Duke didn't hurt either.
"It's a great place to be," said Harrell. "The whole overall environment is great. It just felt like home to me."
A four-star prospect who currently ranks No. 58 in the 2012 Rivals150, Harrell will run with Terrence Taylor's Carolina Elite this summer. Known for his athleticism and tenacity, he's hoping to show off some new wrinkles before heading off to college in 2012.
"I'm just an all-over-the-place guy. I attack the rim, I block shots and I get out and run the floor," said Harrell who averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks per game as a junior. "I can also face up and knock the jump shot down. In college I'm looking to increase my ballhandling and increase my shooting."
