Sometimes it just takes a little longer than a prospect hopes for high-major schools to start getting involved in their recruitment. That appears to be the case with Jamir Chaplin, a 6-foot-4 wing from Meadowcreek High School (Norcross, Ga.) in the 2019 class.

Averaging 16 points per game in Georgia’s highest classification, Chaplin has led his team to an Elite Eight appearance next week and his team is certainly a contender for a state title. Lately, he’s had some high-majors such as Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Syracuse start showing interest in him. Offers are in from Tulane, Middle Tennessee, Illinois State and Florida Gulf Coast so far, but that list will soon grow.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Chaplin shared his thoughts on some schools recruiting him right now and talks about schools he would like to hear from.

Auburn: “I haven’t really seen them this year, but I’ve been looking into them. I know they have a good coaching staff. Coach Bruce Pearl is doing a good job there. It’s a good school.”

Tulane: ‘I’ve had plenty of talks with Mike Dunleavy. He’s a pretty good coach. He coached in the NBA for a while. He says Tulane is a good school and New Orleans is a nice place.”

Middle Tennessee: “They are coming after me hard. They really want me to get up there. They were really good the last couple years and I think they are ranked now.”

Schools he wants to hear from: “Definitely Kentucky. I’m really in love with what coach (John) Calipari has done with that program. UCLA is another one I want to look at. Syracuse is a pretty good school and I’m from up that way. My dad’s friend is up there. I wouldn’t mind going back towards home.”

RIVALS' REACTION

If this one ended today, Mike Dunleavy and the Tulane Green Wave would be in a great spot. The problem for them is we are still almost nine months away from the early signing period for members of the 2019 class. That means there is plenty of time for other top programs to evaluate Chaplin this upcoming travel season with Stackhouse Elite and decide whether to pounce on him or not.

If travel season goes anything like his high school season, Chaplin will have some high-major options to choose from by the time the calendar flips to August. Middle Tennessee is the other school in great shape early on with Chaplin, and like Tulane hoping he slips through the cracks with high-major programs in the area and around the country.
