When Bruce Pearl was hired at Auburn the expectation was that his recruiting would help turn the program around. After reeling in a top 20 class in 2015, Pearl could be on his way to outdoing himself in 2016.
During an unofficial visit to campus, five-star shooting guard Mustapha Heron committed to Pearl and his staff sources confirmed to Rivals.com on Sunday.
A well built 6-foot-5, 200-pounder from Waterbury (Conn.) Sacred Heart, Heron currently ranks No. 19 overall in the 2016 Rivals150.
One of the most versatile guards in a stacked class of 2016, Heron is a former Pittsburgh commitment and the biggest fish that Pearl and his staff have landed since arriving at Auburn back in the spring of 2014.
Heron is very good with the dribble. He is patient, handles well with either hand and knows how to make use of his body while getting to the lane where he finishes through contact or finds teammates. Heron has also developed himself into a solid jump shooter and he is a very good athlete who can get out and make things happen in transition.
Because of his strength and toughness, Heron should also develop into an outstanding defender capable of putting heat on the best wings in the SEC.
Now that Heron is in the fold, Auburn is building a pretty dynamic recruiting class. Point guard Jared Harper is currently an unranked three-star prospect but he'll be making a huge jump into four-star territory when 2016 rankings get updated. Rounding out the group is Anfernee McLemore an athletic and high energy but slightly undersized three-star power forward.
