When you were the first freshman to start for Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic since Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley, you attract attention. Such is the case, for sophomore small forward D.J. Harvey.
"I don't let it get to me much," Harvey said. "I just go out there and play. I'm always trying to get better. I'm also trying to get my team up there. We're ranked nationally I want to get us in the top five."
The 6-foot-7, 210-pounder can score in different ways. Harvey can shoot it or put it on the floor and create his own shot. He is physical enough to score in the paint or in traffic. Harvey has the ability to dribble and pass against pressure, can grab a rebound and push the ball on the break. Harvey also plays with good energy.
"I think my go-to is probably my pull-up," Harvey said. "I'm very athletic and handle the ball pretty well."
Arizona, Memphis, Tennessee, Texas, Houston and Georgetown have offered, and Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina have all shown interest in the Huntsville, Alabama, native.
One school noticeably absent from the list Harvey rattled off is located 10 minutes from DeMatha. Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon and two assistants were at a recent DeMatha game to watch Harvey's teammate Markelle Fultz. Perhaps interest in Harvey will heat up soon.
"They haven't really talked to me much," Harvey said. "I hope that will change, but I don't know. I think it would be an honor to get recognized by top programs like that."
Like with many prospects, ties to programs through friends and/or family may play a role in Harvey's recruitment.
"My dad went to Virginia, they're recruiting me pretty hard. Also at Arizona, Stanley Johnson is a pretty good friend of mine. And with Miami, I have family in Florida," Harvey said.
While watching college teams play, Harvey told us he observes more than just how he'll fit in their system.
"I like to see their tempo, how the coaches let their players play, how the coaches talk to the players and how they play together. Also how the fans react," he said.
Currently ranked No. 17 in the class of 2017, it's still early in Harvey's recruitment, but he's beginning to put together a criteria of what he's looking for at the next level.
"Good academics and coaching," he said. "I want to make sure the coaching staff makes it like home, like a family."
