Norcross (Ga.) High School has pumped out many talented players over the years.
Detroit Pistons shooting guard Jodie Meeks, Dallas Mavericks small forward Al-Farouq
Aminu, former Georgia Tech star Gani Lawal, and Oklahoma City Thunder
shooting guard Jeremy Lamb are just a few of the talented players that have worn
a Blue Devil jersey in the past decade.
Sophomore forward Rayshaun Hammonds is on track to be next on that
list. At 6-foot-8, he's a long, athletic player with the skill level to play on
the perimeter, but also has the toughness to battle inside on the boards.
Stanford, Georgia, George Mason, Tennessee
and Georgia State have already expressed interest in the Georgia native
and he plans to begin taking some unofficial visits this summer.
Stanford spends a lot of time recruiting in Georgia as assistant coach Mike
Schrage is from the metro Atlanta area. The Cardinal signed Marcus Sheffield back in November, and might be coming back for Hammonds in the
class of 2017.
"I like them because they combine academics and basketball," Hammonds said.
"They want to kids that can handle both at the same time. I watched them play
Arizona not too long. They played well."
Georgia's basketball program is beginning to have more success under Mark Fox, and Hammonds has taken notice of their improved play.
"It's a really good program. It's a school I'd really like to attend in the
future. I just need to look into it more. They are playing really good now. They
have a good team."
Tennessee has a long history of reaching down into Georgia and signing talented
basketball prospects. They are among the early list of schools paying attention
to Hammonds.
"I watched Tennessee play against Kansas. I like how they play as a
team and how they are young. I like how they play up-tempo."
Hammonds says a decision isn't coming any time soon. That's mainly because he
doesn't have any offers yet and he's only a sophomore, but he also says there
are two schools he wants to wait on.
"I really want to go to North Carolina or Kentucky, so I want
to see if they come through."
