Grant wins battle against future teammate

HYATTSVILLE, Md. - The slugfest between nationally ranked Oak Hill and Grace Prep highlighted the day at the National High School Hoopfest, but it wasn't the only game featuring top talent. Jerami Grant helped host DeMatha overcome his future teammate, Dajuan Coleman, while several others made waves during the day.

The nature of DeMatha's lopsided 83-57 win over Syracuse (N.Y.) Jamesville-Dewitt made it so none of the Stags big guns had to have huge games. Still, senior Jerami Grant was impressive while putting together a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-7 Grant has continued to fill out his frame and has length to go with his strength. More and more, he looks like a combo forward on the next level as his size and rebounding make him an option to play the four if necessary. Syracuse is getting a good one in the four-star.
Grant's future teammate Dajuan Coleman ended up with 19 and 10 himself. However, during the game's early moments while DeMatha took control, it was junior center BeeJay Anya's ability to bang with Coleman and keep him from establishing position on the low block that got Coleman off to a slow start. Foul trouble ended up limiting Anya's minutes, but he was much more productive toward producing a win than his eight points and five rebounds would show. Anya is in the best shape he's ever been in and rattled off a list that included Kansas, UCLA, Indiana, Syracuse, Georgetown, Maryland, Texas and many others.
George Washington has got a good one in Kethan Savage. He's not really a point guard or a shooting guard, but the 6-foot-2 athlete is a physical guard who makes plays off the dribble. His strength allows him to be fearless when attacking the rim and he will try to dunk on anybody in his way. With Rivals150 teammate Arnaud Adala Moto struggling through a 3-of-16 shooting game, his 22 points and seven boards were key to a win over Benedictine.
VCU had an assistant on hand to watch signee Jordan Burgess collect 13 points and 13 rebounds in a loss. The 6-foot-4 wing is physically ready for college right now and has a very complete game. A three-star prospect, he shoots with range, plays with patience and is excellent on the glass.
Paul VI High School has to be one of the deepest teams in the greater Washington D.C. area. Junior Stanford Robinson, who listed Miami, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Xavier and others is the team's biggest attraction with college coaches. He used his size and skill to make plays.
Also, helping out for Paul VI was shot-making two-guard Patrick Holloway. The 6-foot-1 shooter is as steady as they come and led his team with 21 points.
He doesn't get a lot of time just yet, but keep an eye out for 6-foot-7 power forward Marcus Derrickson down the road. The Paul VI freshman has a big frame, terrific court awareness and he's already a good shooter and terrific outlet passer.
West Charlotte big man Kennedy Meeks struggled. The four-star junior finished with just five points and three rebounds in a loss to Paul VI. He gave a school list of Georgetown, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Syracuseand Boston College.
Helping to pick up the slack for West Charlotte was Western Carolina signee Michael Brown. The 6-foot-3 two guard is a high level athlete who can get to the rim. He helps out on the glass too and finished with 16 points and five rebounds.
For the Bullis School, point guard Joe Hazel was strong in the win over Riverdale Baptist. A big 6-foot-2 point guard, the senior provided some scoring and was tough on the glass. He was in control of the tempo and didn't really force much.
Senior Milan Durant had a nice double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for Riverdale Baptist. A lengthy 6-foot-6 power forward, Durant can run the floor, rebounds in and out of his area and catches most balls thrown his way. His offense isn't highly sophisticated, but he's not without the ability to score either.
