German Guard Scoring Big Time Points

Shooting guard Edwin Ofori-Attah, a foreign exchange student from Germany now playing for Statesville (NC) Christian High School, recently scored 71 points to set the North Carolina single game scoring mark. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Ofori-Attah has also put up gargantuan numbers against some top competition.
His 71 points came against Hickory Grove Christian, a 7-3 AA team out of Charlotte, but two games in particular legitimized Ofori-Attah as a prolific scorer. On Dec. 6, he scored 42 points in the second half against Mt. Zion Christian Academy, the No. 2 team in the country according to The Sporting News. Then on Dec. 15, he put up 54 points against the Italian Junior National Team.

Ofori-Attah’s high school coach John Jordan, who has recently coached in the CBA and IBA, feels that this scoring machine will be scoring for a high major school next year.
“He is probably one of the best unsigned players in the country,” said Coach Jordan. “Monson [Minnesota], Lutz [Charlotte], and McKillop [Davidson] have been in to see him. Clemson is very interested, as well as Providence. His recruitment is really picking up.”
“He is such a talented scorer. Mt. Zion began the second half in a zone, then they went man, then they boxed him, and finally they used two to guard him. He can shoot it off screens, and he is athletic enough to put it on the floor and score. In fact, he took Brandon Rush off the dribble for a 360 dunk.”
Ofori-Attah was the leading scorer on the German 18-U Junior National Team that competed in the World Championships, and he played last year for Montrose Christian.
“He came to Montrose as a highly regarded player,” said Coach Jordan. “His numbers were good there, but he didn’t turn any heads. He was considering going back to Germany and accepting a 40,000 dollar contract with Alva Berlin, one of the top pro teams in Europe. Ironically, I coached the last player to set the North Carolina scoring record. His name is Eddie Lau and he scored 70 in a game. Anyway, Eddie told Edwin about our program. He contacted us, and we were delighted to have him.”
“Edwin is a very smart person who speaks four different languages and wants to study International Business. He wants to get the best education at the best basketball school that he can get. Every year that he plays in America, he enhances his market value as an European Union player. He also thinks he can play in the NBA and will get a better look here.”
Coach Jordan also said that Ofori-Attah has the skills to play the point some in college and can guard the one, two, and three positions. He is presently averaging 32 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game.
He has already officially visited East Carolina and has unofficially visited Charlotte twice. Minnesota wants him to come in for an official visit as well according to Coach Jordan.
“He really likes Minnesota, but he is still weighing all offers,” said Coach Jackson. “He wants to play at the highest level with the best education, so his goal is to land in a conference like the Big Ten, ACC, or SEC.”
