A 6-foot-9 center at Ft. Washington (Md.) National Christian, Ogbonda didn't even need to finish up his official visit with the Yellow Jackets before making up his mind. He announced Friday night via his twitter account that he was ending his recruitment to play his college ball for Brian Gregory and Tech.
The three-star prospect has promise and fits the athletic profile of an ACC big man, but he has work to do before he is ready to produce on both ends.
A sleek athlete who runs the floor very well, Ogbonda's biggest strength at this stage in his development is his ability to protect the rim as a shot blocker. His presence at the rim can allow his teammates to be more aggressive as on the ball defenders with the knowledge that he can help clean up mistakes that they make. As a rebounder he does a good job of going and getting the ball with both hands at the highest point.
Offensively, Ogbonda does have good touch and his hands are solid. He can make short jumpers out to eight or even 10 feet and he does a good job of using the glass on either side of the rim if he can't make it all the way in for a dunk. His footwork will need development and most of all he will need to develop the feel and confidence that can only be developed with lots of repetition to be a reliable low post scorer who has a couple of go to moves.
In the immediate future, the most important thing for Ogbonda will be to add muscle in Georgi Tech's weight room. His frame has plenty of space to carry more bulk and his body type is such that he should be able to pack on muscle without sacrificing the flexibility or mobility that make him an ACC athlete.
