Georgia scores with five-star Ashton Hagans

Christmas came early today for Mark Fox and the Georgia Bulldogs basketball program. Ashton Hagans, the No. 6 prospect in the 2019 class, decided to get his college decision out of the way early and committed to the Dawgs.

A five-star point guard from Newton High School in Covington (Ga.), Hagans becomes the highest ranked prospect to pick Georgia in Mark Fox’s tenure. He joins class of 2011 five-star shooting guard and current Los Angeles Laker Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as the only five-star prospects to stay home and play for Georgia.

Hagans held offers from the likes of Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Wake Forest, among others. But over the past few years, he’s become a regular visitor in Athens, and was in town as recently as Tuesday night to see Georgia take down Georgia Tech 80-59 in Stegeman Coliseum.

Playing with Game Elite’s 2019 team last year in the 17-under division of the Adidas Gauntlet, Hagans established himself as one of the top point guards in his class. At 6-foot-4 and roughly 180-pounds, Hagans is the consummate point guard prospect. He’s an elite passer and one of the more unselfish players around. He possesses a quick first step and gets into the paint with ease to either set up a teammate or finish for himself. Defensively, he’s as feisty as they come, and seems to be at his best when matched up against other highly ranked guard prospects.

Collin Sexton and Trae Young were both five-star point guards in the 2017 class who decided to spurn bluebloods to sign with Alabama and Oklahoma, respectively, and both have made big impacts early in their careers. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hagans follow in their footsteps when he arrives in Athens.
