Gaines A High Major Talent

At first glance, what might grab you about Sundiata Gaines is his frame. For a high school junior, the 6'1'' 190 pound combo guard from Archbishop Molloy High School and member of the class of 2004 is exceptionally strong and ruggedly built. Over the course of his high school season, however, Gaines has established himself as much more than just a physical presence.
Gaines was instrumental in Molloy's 72-68 win over Rice in the CHSAA semifinals Friday night at Holy Cross High School in Flushing, New York. While he racked up 15 points on drives to the cup and pull-ups, it was "Yata's" defensive work that really set the tone for the Stanners. Gaines collected six steals and numerous other deflections, snatching passes and outmuscling Rice's guards for loose balls.

Gaines is very competent offensively, however. Many were curious to see if he had the perimeter skills to play major Division I basketball. Gaines frequently gets his points in the paint by outmuscling other players and angling in for points in close. However, he has also proven to be a very competent slasher, slicing through defenses while possessing the strength to absorb contact and convert. Gaines has shown to be a reliable shot from mid-range and from three, as well. He is an adequate ball-handler who puts in some time running the point for Jack Curran's Stanners.
Many heavy-hitters have at least expressed preliminary interest. Among these include Pittsburgh, Villanova, Florida, Illinois, Seton Hall, St. John's, Miami, Connecticut and Kentucky. Pittsburgh and Villanova have expressed the most interest up to this point.
Sundiata, who is averaging 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, will likely play for The New York Gauchos this summer, as he did last. He is a lock to attend one of the sneaker camps, but hasn't decided which one.
Gaines is a high major talent whose exploits this summer should only lengthen that list.
