Five-star shooting guard Markelle Fultz is headed to Washington, as the trend of five-star prospects being open to non blue blood programs continues to grow.
A 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha who currently ranks No. 23 in the class of 2016, Fultz announced his decision to play for Lorenzo Romar during ESPNU's telecast of the Under Armour Elite 24 Slam Dunk and three-point shooting competition.
Virtually unknown outside of the Washington D.C. area until his junior season, Fultz took the country by storm. After playing junior varsity during his first two years of high school, a growth spurt combined with dynamic mid-range abilities, high end athleticism and a great feel for the game allowed Fultz to emerge as one of the nation's best guard prospects.
Washington was head of the pack and involved early on. Assistant coach Rapheal Chillious began recruiting Fultz at the end of his sophomore season based upon junior varsity game film and Romar soon joined his assistant in recruiting him. By the time Fultz saw his recruitment begin to explode last fall, the Huskies had already extended an early offer.
Following official visits to Arizona and Louisville, Fultz took an official trip to Washington over the weekend with his mother and personal trainer. The visit to Seattle won them over.
"It had everything to do with the quality of person that Lorenzo Romar is and the close relationship he whad with Rapheal Chillious," Williams told Rivals.com. "His mom really trusted them too.
"All of the schools over the last 13 or 14 months have been great. This has been a new situation for all of us with his rise and he's ahead of anything I could have even dreamed of."
On the heels of a top 10 recruiting effort in the class of 2015, Romar and the Huskies are now off to a strong start in 2016. In addition to Fultz, the Huskies have already landed well regarded New Zealand big man Samuel Timmins who will make his way to Seattle after finishing school in New Zealand.
Looking farther ahead, U Dub fans can now start to dream big. The Huskies already hold a commitment from 2018 power forward Jontay Porter, who happens to be the younger brother of 2017's No. 2 ranked -- and Godson of Lorenzo Romar -- Michael Porter.
