Trey McGowens has steadily risen up the rankings over the past year between his play during last travel season as well as how he’s fared playing for perennial powerhouse Hargrave Military Academy. Originally a member of the 2018 class, McGowens decided to move back to the 2019 class last summer and the move has paid off as he now comes in as the No. 88 prospect in the 2019 Rivals150.

Providence is the most recent school to join the battle to sign the South Carolina native. McGowens says he talks most regularly with Baylor, Clemson and Minnesota. He’s been to multiple Clemson games this year and plans to see Baylor in the near future.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Baylor: “They want me to come out as a 2018 recruit. I’ll probably take an official visit there in a couple weeks for their last home game. They beat Kansas the other day and are on the rise.”

Clemson: “They are having a really good season. They are having probably their best season since Trevor Booker when Coach (Oliver) Purnell was there. I’ve been to a few games. They’ve told me the people there are going to be behind more because I’m a local kid.”

Minnesota: “They started off really well and have been struggling lately, but they are getting back into a groove. Coach (Richard) Pitino came to my game the other day. He’s cool. I enjoyed our visit.”

Providence: “I know they had Kris Dunn and one of my good friends David Duke is going there.”

RIVALS REACTION

The big question for McGowens is whether he’ll actually stay in the 2019 class or move back to the 2018 class. He said he’s still leaning towards coming out in the 2019 class, but it’s all about finding the right fit. If he finds a school where the situation is right for him to move back to the 2018 class, he’ll come out this year. If not, he’ll carry on with his plans to sign as a 2019 recruit.

Right now, Baylor and Clemson seem to be the two schools in the best spot to land McGowens. Scott Drew wants to bring him to Waco next year to help bolster the Bears backcourt, and his message seems to be clicking with McGowens. Clemson is located only about 30 minutes from where he’s from and is playing the hometown hero card in attempts to sway McGowens. The success the Tigers are having on the court this year certainly won’t hurt the chances he comes home for college.
