Virginia put the month of March behind it on Wednesday and took a step toward a better future with the commitment of four-star junior Casey Morsell. One of the top guard prospects in the 2019 class, Morsell made quick work of his college recruitment compared with his peers, selecting the Cavaliers over Oklahoma State, Penn State and Maryland.

Morsell told Rivals about the entire package offered by Virginia.

“They are just great at all aspects. Obviously in basketball, they are all great but academically and the culture they have around the school, everyone in Charlottesville, it is impressive to see,” he said.

During an unofficial visit to Virginia this winter, coach Tony Bennett and his staff showed just how Morsell would come to succeed.

“On my visit, one of the things that he did was he pulled up highlights of me and he showed someone like Kyle Guy or Malcolm Brogdon, doing the exact same thing, so if I was coming off a screen, it would show Malcolm Brogdon doing the exact same thing,” he said. “So, it was just about showing how my game would fit in because some of the stuff that I do are some of the exact same things that those guys do.

“I think that I can bring defense, which they are known for of course, and early shot making and passing.”

A 6-foot-3 scoring guard, Morsell is known primarily for his ability to put the ball through the basket. The younger brother of Towson star Mike Morsell, the top-75 prospect has been a primary proponent of St. John’s College High School’s success in recent years. He earned minutes as a freshman during its WCAC Championship, a conference regarded as the best high school league in America.

Virginia has relied on guards that can defend, make shots and distribute, each strong assets of Morsell’s. While Bennett doesn’t have much of a prescribed position for his players in the backcourt, he rather expects any of his guards to make the appropriate play and compete without an ego, a mold that Morsell fits perfectly.

A member of the lauded Team Takeover travel program, Morsell becomes the first member of Virginia’s 2019 recruiting class. He should be expected to see early minutes off the bench as a freshman and develop behind then-seniors Guy and Ty Jerome.
