Five-star Williamson breaks down recruitment

MORE: Bossi Awards from HoopHall

Freakish athleticism and entertaining highlight reels have turned the No. 2 overall player in the 2018 class Zion Williamson into maybe the most popular high school basketball player in America. He's got rapper Drake wearing his jersey and fans can't seem to get enough of him as his Instagram account is now over 162,000 followers with over 100,000 of them following in the last month.

College coaches can't seem to get enough of his game -- which evokes visions of a young Larry Johnson -- either.

Last summer, he collected offers from programs all over the country such as Arizona, Clemson, Duke, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and many others.

Most recently, Kansas and Louisville joined that long list. Kansas coach Bill Self and an assistant watched Williamson go for 39 points and 14 rebounds earlier this week while Kentucky and Maryland have made recent visits as well.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Williamson has seen Clemson, Duke and North Carolina since the Fall and broke down them down.

Clemson: “It’s an amazing environment there. That new gym is really nice.”

Duke: “It was Countdown to Craziness when I went there. They told me if I come to their program they are going to help me develop my game as much as they can for the six months to a year I’m on campus. They said I can play any position one through four. They just want to help me get ready for the draft.”

North Carolina: “It was a lot of the same thing as Duke. They want to help me develop my game as much as they can and it’s also a family-type atmosphere. Coach (Roy) Williams is an energetic dude and he’s very positive about everything.”

WHAT'S NEXT?

The main focus at this point for Williamson is to keep taking as many visits as possible to learn more about each of the schools. He said he hopes to take visits during June when there is a break in the travel season. He’s shooting for November to announce where he’ll play college basketball.

  RIVALS’ REACTION

This one appears to be going in the direction of another classic Tobacco Road battle between Duke and North Carolina. Both schools have prioritized the No. 2 overall player in the 2018 class, and both have had him on campus already. Clemson shouldn’t be counted out as Brad Brownell and the Tigers have done a terrific job with him so far. His newest offers from Kansas and Louisville could end up being factors here as well.
