MORE: Early signing period review | Bossi's Starting Five
The early signing period had been humming along just as expected until five-star shooting guard Lonnie Walker decided to shake things up Wednesday morning.
On the last day of the period, the 6-foot-5 product of Reading (Pa.) High, who ranks No. 20 nationally in the class of 2017 pulled off the period's biggest surprise when he committed to Jim Larrañaga and the Miami Hurricanes.
For the last few weeks, most of the talk regarding Walker had revolved around Arizona and Kentucky. However, over the last 24 hours word started to trickle out from sources that the Hurricanes were very much in the mix and those rumblings proved to be true giving Miami a major recruiting win.
A well-built two guard with deep range on his jumper, Walker projects as an instant impact player in the ACC.
In addition to being a sniper from deep, Walker does a very good job of creating offense without wasting dribbles. Because of his strength and athleticism, Walker is also an exceptional finisher at the rim and a frequent free throw line visitor.
Walker makes what was an already strong class exceptional. He joins four-star point guard Chris Lykes and four-star power forward Deng Gak. Four-star power forward Sam Waardenburg had been a part of the class but will instead enroll early, making him a 2016 recruit.
