By the end of the summer, four-star center Schnider Herard was playing his best ball. The big man had college offers rolling in but now he's down to five and in the process of setting visits.
A native of Haiti who moved to the United States to attend Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian as a freshman, the 6-foot-11 Herard is an imposing figure. He's just as strong as he is big and he really turned up his game by the end of summer.
Playing with Pro Skills at the Nike Peach Jam Herard increased his production to 11.4 points and 6.8 rebounds a game after averaging 8.4 points and 5.8 rebounds during the Elite Youth Basketball League that led up to the Peach Jam.
"I could have done much better but at least I had some success," Herard told Rivals.com. "I was scoring much better and I was able grab as many rebounds as I can during the game and I was running a bit more."
Hoping to wrap up his recruitment by the early signing period, Herard is a true back to the basket guy and he's cut his list down to California, Kansas, Mississippi State, Purdue and Texas Tech. He's set visits to MSU (Sept.
11), Tech (Sept. 25) and Kansas where he'll attend Late Night in the Phog for the second year in a row on the weekend of
Oct. 9.
Currently ranked No. 41 in the Rivals150, Herard spoke briefly about each program.
California: "It's a really good college and a great academic school and a basketball program that's on the rise."
Kansas: "The main thing about Kansas is the high low. They play through their big guys so that's always intriguing."
Mississippi State: "They also play through their big men and coach Howland has had some success at
UCLA and other schools where he's been which is intriguing."
Purdue- "Coach Painter has had some success with guys like
AJ Hammonds and they have a history of playing big boy basketball."
Texas Tech: "They've got a good education program over there. A former teammate,
Zach Smith, plays there so there's familiarity with a couple of guys on their team."
Visit dates for Cal and Purdue should be locked in soon and for now Herard is planning to take all five of his visits. Potential playing time will be important and even more important will be feeling that he will be given a chance to play through mistakes. Of course, his overall relationship with the coach and feel for the campus will be most important.
"I think I will sign early," said Herard. "What I'm looking for is where I feel will be the best fit from a community standpoint and a coaching standpoint."
