The day started with a prospect from Georgia emerging as a high-major recruit and the level of play was consistently high and entertaining throughout the day, ending with a triple overtime game between the Atlanta Xpress and Houston Defenders.
Mo Williams Academy's roster is loaded with high-major talent, but arguably the most talented player is five-star shooting guard
Terrance Ferguson. The 6-foot-6 wing didn't have his best game on Friday night in a matchup with
Josh Jackson, the top-rated player in the class of 2016, but he bounced back nicely in a Sunday win over Team Felton, finishing with 19 points.
It doesn't take long to see why coaches are so excited about Ferguson. He's a long, athletic kid that can make plays with the ball in his hands and has a pure stroke. MWA also ran a couple plays for Ferguson where he could show off his athleticism by catching an alley-oop.
On the recruiting side, Ferguson said he's been hearing from
Arkansas,
Baylor,
Kansas,
Louisville,
Texas A&M along with many others. The Texas native said he also just recently spoke with new
Alabama coach
Avery Johnson.
"He's a former NBA coach and former NBA player, so who wouldn't want to play for him?" Ferguson said. "He's just trying to build a relationship so far and build a bond with me."
Ferguson doesn't have a timeline for his decision and said he's still interested in all the schools recruiting him.
Trevon Duval had a spectacular weekend for We-R1 in New Orleans. He capped it off with 14 points in a Sunday morning win over 1 Nation, and while that number won't jump out at anybody, it was the way he scored those that was most impressive.
The five-star prospect is absolutely electric in the open court and is so strong and physical going to the rim. On one play, he had the ball at the top of the key, crossed over a defender, and went down the lane for a tomahawk dunk in traffic. At 6-foot-4, the 2017 prospect also has a smooth jumper that goes down with regularity.
Duval told Rivals.com on Friday night that
Connecticut,
Louisville,
Syracuse and
Villanova are coming at him hardest and have extended scholarship offers. Outside of Louisville, each school had a coach in attendance to see him, along with coaches from several other schools.
The hype had been building about Atlanta Xpress small forward
Khavon Moore throughout his freshman year at Westside (Ga.) Macon, but we saw it for ourselves in the Xpress 59-53 victory over Team Thad in the 15U division Sunday.
Moore didn't have the most impressive stat line on his team. That belonged to 6-foot-6 power forward
Anquaevious Pollard, who pumped in 21 points and 14 rebounds, and was dominant in the paint.
Moore did, however, show why he'll be arguably the most highly recruited prospect in Georgia's 2018 class. At 6-foot-7, he can legitimately play point guard and that's exactly where he spent most of his time on Sunday morning. He's a smooth ball-handler, possesses great court vision, and showed the ability to make tough shots down the stretch as he hit an 18-foot step-back jumper with the shot clock running down and just over a minute remaining.
Auburn head coach
Bruce Pearl was sitting courtside, flanked by an assistant. Xavier assistant
Mike Pegues also was in attendance. Moore said he's already received interest from George Mason, Kansas,
Mississippi State,
Stanford and
Virginia Tech. He's also taken a visit to
Georgia Tech.
