EYBL L.A. churns out another day of action

HARBOR CITY, Calif.- Sunday was another busy day at the Hanger Athletic Xchange for Day 2 of the Los Angeles EYBL session. Recent Virginia commitment Justin Anderson came up big in a win over the New York Gauchos while others like Nerlens Noel, Jake Layman, Marcus Paige and Brandon Ashley among others had nice outings as well.

Sunday's EYBL standouts

Justin Anderson, SF, Boo Williams- There isn't anybody who packs more overall entertainment value than Anderson. The 6-foot-5 Virginia commitment is a ridiculously gifted athlete who can dominate a game on either side of the floor. When he's locked in and serious like he was versus the New York Gauchos, he is about as good as any wing in the country. He hit long threes, used his strength and athleticism in transition and at the rim and played good defense while pulling down double digit rebounds.

Ricardo Ledo, SG, Albany City Rocks- He had some shots rimming out on him, but Ledo continues to show that he's a high level talent. At 6-foot-5 he's got excellen size for a two and he can get his shot off of the dribble whenever and wherever he wants it.

Nerlens Noel, C, BABC- The 6-foot-10 junior to be is as good as it gets on the defensive side of things. An effortless shot blocker, he rarely bites on pump fakes and understands how to use his length and athleticism to wreak havoc on the defensive end. Offensively, Noel isn't too shabby either. He can do some things as a scorer and is a fabulous passer for a big man.

Georges Niang, PF, BABC- The recent Iowa State commitment is a very big part of BABC's talented front court. He seemingly has a knack for always being in the right place at the right time, never gives up on plays and is a good all around player. A natural scorer with skill, he was impressive in BABC's romp over Meanstreets.

Marcus Paige, PG, All Iowa Attack- Paige has looked very good in Los Angeles. After providing some scoring pop early yesterday, Paige was back to orchestrating the show in a blowout win over the Georgia Stars. The North Carolina commitment was more effective taking his defender off of the dribble and was working hard to create for others.

Jake Layman, SF, BABC- If Layman plays like he did on Sunday for the rest of the summer he could see his stock soar. A legitimate 6-foot-8, he looks like a genuine small forward. He has a pretty shot with deep range, is swift in the open floor and an excellent finisher on the break. According to Layman Providence, Boston College and UMass have offered while Maryland and Notre Dame have been showing more recent interest.

Sim Bhullar, C, CIA Bounce- There wasn't anything that Athlete's First could do to stop Bhullar other than hope he got tired. The massive center remains one of the more unique prospects in all of high school ball and has improved a great deal over the last year. He has outstanding hands, soft touch and seems to be playing harder each time out.

Xavier Rathan-Mayes, SG, CIA Bounce- What isn't there to like about the 2014 guard's game at this point? He can shoot the rock, passes very well and looks to be a very good teammate. Sounds like he'll be headed somewhere on the West Coast for his sophomore year and Findlay Prep was being tossed out as a potential destination.

Alex Poythress, SF/PF, Georgia Stars- While the rest of his team struggled mightily with the All Iowa Attack, Poythress put up a game effort. The 6-foot-8 forward was hitting deep threes, using his athleticism at the rim and also hit a nifty floater/flip shot from about 12 feet off the dribble. When he gets active on the glass and runs the floor, his entire game seems to open up.

Brandon Ashley, PF, Oakland Soldiers- The 6-foot-8 power forward from Oakland was outstanding against the Albany City Rocks. He used every bit of his quickness, every inch of his length and all of his skill to impact the game on both ends of the floor. Easily the best that we've seen the five-star forward play all spring.

Jarnell Stokes, PF, Memphis YOMCA- There's not much movement with Stokes recruitment now and he didn't play any differently than he has all spring long. The Memphian big man is a bull around the rim with great feet, strong hands and a non-stop motor.

Rondae Jefferson, SF, Team Final- We knew what the 6-foot-6 junior to be from Chester, PA was a big time competitor. We also knew that he was an excellent finisher. What we didn't realize is how good of a playmaker he is for himself and others off of the dribble. A cerebral player who understands the game, his recruitment is going to end up a high level affair.

More Sunday EYBL notes and noteables

More than likely, Zach Auguste is going to emerge from the summer with some high major offers. Though he is on the slender side, the 6-foot-8 power forward is athletic, runs the floor well and has a good feel around the basket. He was active on both ends of the floor for the Albany City Rocks. … For the second day in a row, Jordan Woodard was very good for Athlete's First. Hard not to like his aggressiveness in going to the rim and ability to make some jumpers. … Not that anybody really needs to be reminded of it, but Anthony Bennett is one tough hombre. Powerful, athletic and skilled, he's the kind of guy that people in the gym make their way over to watch as he rattles the rims for CIA Bounce. Bennett indicated that he's really just getting into the recruiting process and he mentioned the likes of UConn, West Virginia, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Florida, Florida State, Cincinnati, N.C. State, Oklahoma and Xavier as having tossed offers in his direction. …

It was another nice day for lanky wing Jodan Price of Detroit based, The Family. The lanky wing was scoring it big again but he got help from another wing on Sunday as Junior Lomomba provided a nice compliment to Price's perimeter sniping. More of a rugged wing than jump shooter, the 6-foot-4 Lomomba is turned on by The Family to handle the dirty work. He'll defend big guys at times, scores going to the rim and plays unselfishly. A native of Canada who attends Madison (Wisc.) Memorial, he's a tough glue guy who does the little things and can be relied upon to give a big effort on both ends of the floor and the glass whether he's getting the ball on the offensive end or not. ... Family point guard Cameron Fowler also joined in the party. He pushed tempo, made some timely buckets and was active with the ball and got teammates involved while really harassing All Ohio point guard Terry Rozier. ...

Tyree Robinson was a bit more aggressive with his offense for the Oakland Soldiers on Sunday. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard is a well built and athletic 2013 prospect whose biggest weapon is a nice pull-up jumper that he's comfortable hitting whether going to his right or left. … Watching Austin Colbert more, there's a pretty good chance that we under ranked him when we updated the class of 2013. It was good to see him battle with much more physically developed guys like Jarnell Stokes and Shaquille Goodwin. You never want to bail on a young big man with skill too early and Colbert definitely has skill. … After looking timid the first weekend he played with Memphis YOMCA at EYBL #1 in Hampton, Ishmail Wainright was much more assertive on Saturday. The powerful and athletic 2013 wing was a terror on the glass and quite aggressive in attacking the rim. The key for Wainright is to stay in that aggressive frame of mind and put pressure on defenders with his ability to slash, pass and hit the offensive glass. Frank Haith was wise to lock him up early for Missouri. …
