Lithonia (Ga.) Miller Grove point guard Alterique Gilbert recently trimmed his list down to five schools in hopes of having a decision made by the end of the summer.
Connecticut, Illinois, Louisville, Syracuse and
Texas made the four-star point guard's final cut, but only the Huskies have been able to get Gilbert on campus for an official visit so far.
As it turns out, Gilbert saw enough on that one official visit to go ahead and end his recruitment. On Saturday morning, he announced his commitment to Connecticut.
Kevin Ollie, a long-time NBA point guard who has the reputation of developing point guards such as
Shabazz Napier, played a big role in his decision.
"For me being a point guard, a small point guard and Kevin Ollie being able to fight through adversity like that for 13 years stands out," Gilbert recently told Rivals.com. "Playing for many different NBA teams, it showed how hard he worked."
The Georgia native recently saw his ranking jump significantly in the updated 2016 Rivals150 all the way up to 39th overall in the country. Although on the small side at just under 6-foot, Gilbert is one of the best playmakers in the country. He's electric with the ball in his hands in the open court and can score with the best of them. He's already helped lead Miller Grove to two state titles and is hoping to win a third as a senior.
Gilbert joins fellow Rivals150 member Mamadou Diarra in Connecticut's 2016 class.
