East coast schools tracking 2018 G Luther Muhammad

RELATED: Bossi's best: Junior value

The Hudson Catholic (N.J.) basketball team has not been one to lay low this winter as they have traveled outside of their locale in competing within the more prestigious high school tournaments. One reason that the Jersey-based program is able to do this is because of Luther Muhammad. The 6-foot-4 junior guard has steadily improved every step of the way as he showed off his entire offensive weaponry during his time at the Hoophall Classic in mid-January.

Muhammad, the No. 56-ranked junior, is being pursued by St. John’s, Seton Hall, Temple and Cincinnati, among others and no commitment is imminent.

As tough as they come at the off-guard position, Muhammad has built his game on playing hard each possession, showing that he can do whatever is asked out of him, and has now developed an overall skillset that makes him a difficult offensive weapon to stop.

Running alongside top-40 guard Jahvon Quinerly at Hudson Catholic, Muhammad simply has to get open off of the ball in order to get clean looks at the basket. However, during his time in Springfield, the four-star junior displayed a polished mid-range and step-back game as he hit on three of his five jumpers from outside of 15 feet while still showing his grit on tough scores at the basket. In all, Muhammad finished with 24 points, three rebounds and two steals.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Muhammad discussed where he stands with his current suitors.

“I speak the most with Tulane, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Cincinnati and Xavier. I went to the Temple and Cincinnati game, I went to a St. John’s game, I go to Seton Hall games all the time, and I went to a Rutgers game.

“(St. John’s) likes the way that I play. They just talk about keep playing hard and my personality and the person that I am.

“I don’t know yet (about a timetable for committing). I am just enjoying the process right now. It’s just about find a good fit for me, that I feel comfortable, and it feels like a family. I am looking for another family.”

WHAT'S NEXT

Muhammad has grown into a priority recruit on the east coast and is in no hurry to make a decision. Expect for him and his Hudson Catholic program to finish out their season on a high note this winter before the 6-foot-4 guard enters into his senior summer on the travel circuit.

RIVALS REACTION

Most of the time, when we think about blue collar ballplayers, we think of guys that have to overcome skill and talent deficiencies and in doing so, rely more on their physicality and hardworking manner on the court. That is not the case with Muhammad. He is as tough as they come, the type of shooting guard that would have excelled in the old Big East, but also has the shot making acumen that makes him a difficult stop within the half-court setting. Thus, it is not difficult to see why so many of the local powerhouse programs have made Muhammad a prospect that they have placed atop of their recruiting boards.
