Dwight Howard talks about future

RivalsHoops’ top prospect for the 2004 class, Dwight Howard from Southwest Atlanta (GA) Christian High School, has close to 20 scholarship offers and is currently in the process of narrowing down his list of favorites.
“My parents and I have been discussing which schools would fit me best. We haven’t narrowed it down to my five favorites but it’s shorter than it was a month ago,” Howard said. “Duke, North Carolina, Florida, Florida State, Indiana, Georgia and Georgia Tech are a few who have stood out. Although there are other schools I’m still considering.”

Howard, 6-foot-10, 225-pounds, indicated that part of the criteria for narrowing down his list would be academics related.
“Academics are very important to me and my parents. I plan to major in fine arts and minor in computer technology or business so I’m looking for a college that’s strong in those areas,” Howard said. “There is more to college than basketball and I hope to surround myself with people who won’t try to lead me down the wrong path and also a place where I can continue to further my education.”
Howard also stated that he was hoping to find the perfect environment between students and athletes.
“I want to be able to go out and be myself where ever I go and have fun. Not be a basketball player but just a normal person,” Howard said. “I’m looking for the place I will fit in the best and be the most comfortable whether it’s close to home or far away.”
As might be expected with a player of Howard’s size and athletic ability, the NBA could also factor into his decision.
“I’m not really worried about the NBA but my dad and I have talked it over and we have a plan,” Howard said. “I’m going to wait and see where I am during my senior year. If I’m projected to go in the top five picks of the draft then I will have to go.”
“But I want to attend college and that it was I am making plans for,” Howard added. “If the NBA happens that would be great but I won’t be disappointed if it doesn’t.”
This summer Howard, who carries a 3.0 GPA, will tour the AAU summer circuit with the Atlanta Celtics.
