Dunbar Crushes Chesapeake
COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND -- Baltimore City's Dunbar High School (21-5) overwhelmed Baltimore County's Chesapeake High (15-12), 116-41, in the Maryland State 1A semifinals in Cole Field House on the University of Maryland's campus Friday afternoon. The Poets take on Pocomoke High School, from Maryland's eastern shore, in the state final Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Dunbar, ranked at number five in the Baltimore Sun's poll, broke out to a 15-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Bayhawks scored eight, 10, 10 and 13 points in the four periods; the Poets tallied 36 points in the second quarter alone.
The Poets were led by the senior guard tandem of
JuJuan Robinson and
James Taylor with 21 and 18 points, respectively. Both averaged 18.4 points per game this season and, this week, were named to the City All-Stars for the
Charm City Classic. Robinson also dished out a game-high nine assists while junior swingman Byron Selby also hit double digits with 11 points. Thirteen Dunbar players hit the scoring column; the 14th, Jason Garland, grabbed one rebound.
Junior center
Michael Thompson had game highs of 11 rebounds and eight blocks. Four of those blocks came in a two-minute period at the end of the first half.
Head Coach Eric Lee played bench players in the fourth quarter. And these guys apparently really value playing time. After a time out, senior guard Devon Valentine let the inbound pass roll past the half court line before picking it up with 1:10 left in the game.
Chesapeake was led by junior Anthony Boyce with eight points and 10 rebounds. The Rebels had two assists, compared to 28 from the Baltimore City squad.
