Duke landed the first of what they hope is a handful of five-star prospects Thursday when shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. selected the Blue Devils.

After spending his first three high school seasons in the same Apple Valley (Minn.) High program that produced former point guard Tyus Jones, Trent has moved on to Napa (Calif.) Prolific Prep for his senior season and made his announcement official on ESPN.

"In the fall of 2017 I will be attending Duke University," said Trent. "The thing about Duke is the brotherhood behind and Coach K. There's so many things behind it you just can't turn it down."

One of the most in-your-face and aggressive players in the class of 2017, Trent inherited much of the toughness and competitive juice that allowed his father to play nearly 10 years in the NBA as a 6-foot-8 power forward/center.

Trent also inherited some of his father's game. Though he is a shooting guard by trade and likes to mix up deep jumpers with strong drives, Trent's biggest strength is his ability to post up. Whether it's in the low post or from the mid-post, Trent has a post game as, if not more, lethal as the best post players in the class of 2017. The ability to score at all three levels and be a reliable post option really gives him an advantage.

There are times that Trent's shooting percentages suffer a bit because of shot selection, but there will never be any issues with his confidence.

Trent joins four-star shooting guard Alex O'Connell in Duke's 2017 class and the Blue Devils are still involved with other five-star prospects like posts Wendell Carter and Mohamed Bamba and wing Kevin Knox.
