Apple Valley (Mn.) shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. had a dominant spring playing with Howard Pulley in the Nike EYBL. The four-star prospect developed a reputation as being one of the top scorers in the Class of 2017, and his recruitment has taken off, as well.
Most recently, he received an offer from the reigning national champion Duke Blue Devils.
"It's a great program," Trent Jr. said. "I talked to Coach K while I was in Argentina for USA Basketball. He said he loves my game and to keep working and that he wanted to offer me."
Oregon also came through with an offer recently.
"I really didn't know too much about Oregon until the coaches started telling me about them," Trent Jr. said. "He said they are a program on the rise and how they have a connection with Nike and all the jerseys they have. He had a lot of fun facts for me."
Ohio State jumped on the 45th ranked prospect in the 2017 Rivals150 early and have been relentlessly recruiting him ever since.
"They are on me hard. They are great. They send guys to the next level. They got a great tradition and history in basketball. Coach (Thad) Matta is a great coach and knows what he's doing. He lets his players play from what it looks like on TV."
The Buckeyes have a connection to Trent Jr. that could help their chances of signing him down the road. Assistant coach Jeff Boals played alongside Gary Trent Sr. at Ohio University.
"He's good. I've known him since I was like eight years old. He went to college with my dad, so in a sense, he's almost like an uncle."
Bill Self's track record of putting out NBA talent could make Kansas a serious player in his recruitment.
"Kansas is a great program. They have players in the draft every year, so they know what it takes to get guys to the next level. They know how to prepare them."
The only school to have Trent Jr. on campus recently is nearby Minnesota.
"They have a nice class coming in this year and next year. They should be on the rise. I think they have a good staff. They have a great thing going there. They seem to really know the game of basketball."
Since Trent Jr. has yet to take many visits, he's still a long ways away from trimming down his list and picking a school.
"I really couldn't even tell you when that will happen. I still have to take visits to schools and see what the universities are about. I really want to see what type of connection I have with these coaches when I start taking visits and the relationship we build and the style of play. That will all factor into my decision."
For the same reason, he's hesitant to name favorites at this point.
"They are all pretty even right now. Every school that has offered is really just a blessing and it really shows that they believe in me."
