Duke lands surprise commitment from Goldwire

Duke has been in the market for a point guard in the 2017 class for quite some time now, and most expected Trevon Duval to fill that spot.

Duval may still end up in Durham, but in a surprising twist, three-star point guard Jordan Goldwire committed to the Blue Devils on Monday night.

The Georgia native announced his decision while on campus for an official visit.

“I’m just very excited and happy Coach K is giving me this opportunity,” Goldwire told Rivals.com. “It’s something I never could have dreamed of and I’m just ready to get started.”

Goldwire received his offer from Duke during the visit. Prior to his commitment, Goldwire had officially visited Eastern Kentucky and Mercer. At various times in the process, Arizona State, Providence, UNLV, Tulane, Rice and Fordham were involved in his recruitment.

He joins fellow Georgia natives Wendell Carter and Alex O’Connell along with Gary Trent to make up Duke’s 2017 recruiting class. Goldwire played alongside O’Connell on Team United in the Nike EYBL last summer.

As a senior at Norcross High School in Georgia, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound floor general averaged 12 points and 6 assists per game and helped lead his team to the state championship game before losing a close one to Tift County.
