Not many in the class of 2018 had a better summer than soon to be five-star point guard Devon Dotson. After solidifying his reputation as one of the nation's top floor generals, he's looking to make a college decision.
In early August, Dotson visited Arizona but with commitments from two point guards the Wildcats are now out of the picture. Last weekend, Dotson was in Lawrence, Kans. checking out what Bill Self and Kansas have to offer him as a player.
Dotson visited the Jayhawks for a game during the 2016-17 season so his goals on this trip were specific.
“My expectations were getting to see more of the campus and seeing how it felt hanging out with the guys and seeing how the players were," Dotson told Rivals.com. "Also seeing more of how I could fit into the program in the future and talking to the coaches and forming relationships.
“The takeaway is that Bill Self is making me a priority and that he wants to put the ball in my hands. He thinks I could be the next great point guard coming out of Kansas and that was the biggest takeaway.”
Next up, Dotson confirmed to Rivals.com that he will take an official visit to Florida -- another school he's seen unofficially -- on the weekend of September 8th. He also mentioned some others he could visit.
"I'm going to take an official visit to Florida on the weekend of September 8th," said Dotson. "I might take an official to Maryland, coach (Steve) Alford at UCLA is talking about doing an in home and going from there and there's also Clemson."
Late in the summer, Dotson switched teams so that he could play alongside 2018's No. 2 ranked player Zion Williamson on South Carolina Supreme in Las Vegas. He enjoyed playing with the walking highlight reel and said the two discussed possibly playing together -- Clemson and Kansas are the programs they share interest in.
“We talked about (playing together) a lot out there," said Dotson. "We click, we gelled and I think we would be close to unstoppable in college if we were playing together. It would be fun.”
Moving ahead, Dotson hasn't set any exact date for making a decision, he just knows that he would like to get things done in time for the early signing period and that what matters to him in picking a school has remained the same.
“I think they’ve stayed the same," said Dotson of his priorities. "It’s the relationships with the coaching staff, development on and off the court and getting me prepared for the next level. And then there’s winning. That’s the key.
“My goal is to decide before the basketball season so hopefully that means signing early.”
