Day two at the Beach Ball Classic

Myrtle Beach, S.C.- In the second day of action at the 25th annual Beach Ball Classic, Thaddeus Young displayed his full range of abilities as he led Memphis Mitchell with 26 points and 8 rebounds in a blowout win against the host team Myrtle Beach.

Thaddeus Young (2006, Mitchell)- The future Georgia Tech star patiently let the game come to him. At the right moments he attacked the basket, and he stroked a couple from three. As one of the most versatile players in the country, Young literally did a little bit of everything for his team during his limited minutes of play. Finished with 26 points on 9 of 13 shooting including 2 of 2 from three and 6 of 6 from the line, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 0 turnovers and 1 steal in 19 minutes of play.

Brandon Powell (2006, Mitchell)- Powell fired up 20 three-pointers in 19 minutes of play, connecting on eight of them for his total of 24 points. Not necessarily a typical stat line for the future Florida Gator, but he does need to diversify his offensive game. He is a physical and solid defender. Finished with 24 points on 8 of 20 shooting (all three point attempts) and 0 of 3 from the line, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 1 block and 1 steal in 19 minutes of play.

Dayton Dunbar (Ohio) 69, Monsignor Pace (Fla.) 64

Daequan Cook (2006, Dunbar)- Handled the ball well against Pace's pressure defense. Very dangerous player in the midrange area either on the bounce or by posting up. Great bank shooter and fade away shooter. Will score in a multitude of ways for Ohio State. Finished with 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting including 1 of 2 from the arc and 4 of 6 from the line, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 1 steal in 22 minutes of play.

Aaron Pogue (2007, Dunbar)- Simply put, Pogue just does not play with much passion. He has great size, good hands and can pass the ball, but is behind too many plays, both physically and mentally, and does not finish with authority. Will be interesting to see if the light turns on in college. Finished with 13 points on 3 of 9 shooting from the field and 8 of 12 from the line, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 turnovers and 2 blocks in 27 minutes of play.

Mark Anderson (2006, Dunbar)- Very active athlete as an undersized power forward. Outside shot needs a lot of work. Doesn't shy away from contact or the ball, but his skills with the ball do need improving. Intriguing mid-major, possible low high-major prospect. Finished with 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting and 4 of 7 from the line, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 steal in 32 minutes of play.

Rayford Shipman (2008, Pace)- Has a sweet shooting stroke from three although he struggled in this game. Can also get into the lane, but almost always goes right. Midrange pull up game is still a work in progress. Does need to improve his handle. He was not around the ball when Pace was being hounded by Dunbar's press. Works hard and is active on the defensive end. Finished with 22 points on 7 of 18 shooting including 1 of 6 from three and 7 of 9 from the line, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 turnovers in 28 minutes of play.

Terrance Saintil (2008, Pace)- Intriguing athletic power forward prospect. Only logged 8 minutes of play and fouled out. Finished with 6 points on 3 of 3 shooting, 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

Rufus King (Wis.) 71, Miami Sr. 51

Mitchell Carter (2006, Rufus King)- The future South Carolina center showed signs of improvement. He posted hard for position and looked like he legitimately wanted the ball. Had a couple nice post moves, albeit methodical, to his left shoulder for jump hooks. Face up game needs a lot of work. Although he has limited lift, he did pursue the ball off the glass. Gave Collins some trouble defensively in the post with his size, but did not have the foot speed to guard his spin move. Finished with 9 points on 4 of 7 shooting and 1 of 3 from the line, 6 rebounds, 1 turnover, 2 blocks and 1 steal in 20 minutes of play.

Korie Lucious (2008, Rufus King)- Very promising point guard prospect. Has a very good feel for the game and sees the floor well. He has a tight handle and goes left very well, even appearing to prefer to go left. Also shoots the ball well. To be a top tier point guard prospect, he needs to gain strength and become more physical, especially as a defender and rebounder. Finished with 14 points on 3 of 9 shooting including 2 of 6 from three and 6 of 6 from the line, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 turnovers and 2 steals in 25 minutes of play.

Dwayne Collins (2006, Miami Sr.)- A very good athlete with a long wing span, but Collins has not yet developed the skill set to do much with his athleticism. His one effective move in the post was a quick spin move to the baseline. Scored his points primarily on put backs off offensive rebounds. Struggles to score away from the basket and to make his free throws. He has a low release and a very low follow through. Can run the floor and rebound, but does not have good hands. Miami has a challenge in front of them to develop Collins into more than a running, rebounding athlete. Finished with 19 points on 7 of 16 shooting including 0 of 1 from three and 5 of 13 from the line, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block and 4 steals in 32 minutes of play.

DeMatha (Md.) 78, MLK (Calif.) 60

Austin Freeman (2007, DeMatha)- The Georgetown commitment led the way with 28 points on 10 of 15 shooting including 1 of 4 from three and 7 of 7 from the line, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 turnovers in 28 minutes of play.

Nigel Munson (2006, DeMatha)- The future Virginia Tech guard added 15 points on 6 of 13 shooting including 1 of 3 from three and 2 of 2 from the line, 1 rebound, 7 assists, 1 turnover and 2 steals in 30 minutes of play.

Mater Dei (Calif.) 65, Brophy (Ariz.) 47

Taylor King (2007, Mater Dei)- Led all scorers with 35 points on 13 of 25 shooting including 4 of 7 from three and 5 of 5 from the line, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 2 blocks and 2 steals in 31 minutes of action.

Kamyron Brown (2007, Mater Dei)- Added 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting including 1 of 1 from three and 0 of 1 from the line, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 turnovers and 2 steals in 25 minutes of action.

North Carolina's Roy Williams. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. Villanova's Jay Wright were all in attendance watching Taylor King. Assistants from Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Florida were also spotted during the day.
