Combo guard Payton Willis took an unofficial visit to Vanderbilt on Tuesday. When Kevin Stallings and his staff offered him a scholarship during the visit, Willis didn't need much time to accept.
Wednesday morning, the 6-foot-3 combo guard from Fayetteville (Ark.) High announced via his twitter account that he was ending his recruitment in favor of the Commodores.
A member of Nike Elite Youth Basketball League participant the Arkansas Wings, the three-star Willis is an intriguing commitment for the Commodores.
Prior to earning an offer from Vanderbilt, most of Willis' recruitment had taken place on the mid- to upper-mid major level. However, he had the look of a kid who could go to that level and end up helping a high-major program somewhere down the road.
From a style perspective, Willis is a fit for Vanderbilt and when you combine that with his size, versatility and the fact that there is not an immediate need for him to come in and play major minutes or produce right away, it is easy to see why a scholarship was offered and a commitment taken.
Most importantly, Willis is an excellent shooter from deep. At 6-foot-3 he can play either the point or shooting guard and he is a ball control guard who doesn't force anything that isn't there. A bit of a late bloomer who came on strong during the latter part of the summer, Willis is also a good defender and does a very nice job of finishing with his off hand when he attacks the basket.
Willis is the first player to commit to Vanderbilt from the class of 2016.
