City of Palms: Gilchrists turn to shine

MORE: Rivers has huge night at City of Palms | Gordon shines at City of Palms
FORT MYERS, Fla. - After Austin Rivers stole the show on Monday night, Mike Gilchrist took the court by storm on Tuesday night, pushing Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick into the finals of the City of Palms Classic.

Behind a game-high 34 points by Gilchrist, St. Patrick took down Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei 71-61 to set up a final showdown with Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton.
Gilchrist came out on fire, knocking down two tough three-pointers and then proceeded to attack the rim and clean up the glass throughout the game. He was most impressive in the midrange where his strength and touch couldn't be matched by Mater Dei.
Gilchrist shot an impressive 15-of-23 from the field and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. The only blemish on the night for Gilchrist was his 2-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Providing plenty of support for Gilchrist in the paint, freshman center Dakari Johnson went for a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
High scoring guard Derrick Gordon knocked down 7-of-12 shots for 17 points and also handed out four assists to zero turnovers.
Mater Dei freshman Shaqquan Aaron had a huge night with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting, 6-of-8 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the line. His fellow freshman teammate played made his imprint on the boards. With no teammate grabbing more than two rebounds, Stanley Johnson grabbed nine boards himself.
Four-star prospect Xavier Johnson hit double figures with 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Milton 63, Winter Park 62
An impressive team effort by Milton was enough to disappoint the local crowd and edge an Austin Rivers-dominant Winter Park (Fla.) team by one point.
Despite facing a box-and-one defense in the first quarter, Rivers and his team started out hot and took a six-point lead into the locker room at half. Rivers had 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and Winter Park appeared to have control of the game.
Shannon Scott and Julian Royal, however, came out of the looker room and continued their strong play, leading Milton on a 9-0 run to take the lead. Winter Park only scored six points in the third quarter and could never completely close the gap.
Pivotal to Milton's success was the defense of Dai-Jon Parker, who switched onto Rivers and held him in check the entire half. Rivers shot only 3-of-11 in the second half and was forced into difficult attempts down the stretch.
Offensively, Milton was led by the strong all-around play of Scott. Not only did Scott score 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, he also dished out six assists to only one turnover. He also was Milton's second leading rebounder with six boards.
Holding things down in the paint for Milton was Royal. He scored 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting while also snagging 10 rebounds.
Role player Jordan Loyd came up big for Milton as well with 14 points and a number of hustle plays.
Rivers led Winter Park with 25 points and a team high 10 rebounds.
James McAdoo (2011, Norfolk Christian)
McAdoo didn't play the first quarter, but in the three quarters that followed, he spearheaded a near 20-point comeback against Dwyer. McAdoo spent most of the game playing on the perimeter, but he still managed to shoot 9-of-21, 0-of-4 from the arc and 4-of-6 from the line for a game-high 24 points. He also had five rebounds in 24 minutes of action.
Jacoby Brissett (2011, Dwyer)
Once again, Brissett came off the bench and was the "go-to" guy for Dwyer. One of the most consistent performers of the event, Brissett scored a team-high 22 points on 7-13 shooting from the field and 8-10 shooting from the line. He also had eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.
Damarcus Harrison (2011, Christ School)
Harrison, who is headed to BYU, plays a solid and tough brand of basketball. He is a reliable catch-and-shoot wing and can also score off the dribble. Defensively, he gives effort and rebounds his position. He was the game-high scorer with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting, 2-of-6 from three, and 4-of-4 from the line to go along with six rebounds.
Marshall Plumlee (2011, Christ School)
Plumlee was a force defensively, blocking six shots and keeping the Whitney Young big men in check.
Sam Thompson (2011, Whitney Young)
Scoring isn't Thompson's forte and he struggled from the field in this game, but he does everything else at an impressive level. Playing as Whitney Young's primary ball handler, Thompson also defended at a high level and grabbed six rebounds. On 5-of-15 shooting, 1-of-6 from behind the arc, Thompson scored 11 points.
Shabazz Muhammad (2012, Bishop Gorman)
Despite having an unusually low rebounding total of three, Muhammad scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting, 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 9-of-11 from the line.
Rosco Allen (2012, Bishop Gorman)
Allen had an impressive stat line against a smaller Ft. Myers team. On 5-of-8 shooting, 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 at the line, he scored 16 points. Allen also grabbed seven rebounds to go with four assists and five blocks.
Isaiah Lewis (2013, Christ the King)
Lewis impressed with his midrange scoring game off the dribble. On 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 4-4 shooting from the line, he scored 20 points. Lewis also dished out four assists.
Omar Calhoun (2012, Christ the King)
Calhoun cooled after a strong first half, but he did end up with a team-high 21 points on 5-of-15 shooting, 1-of-6 from behind the arc and 10-of-12 from the line. He displayed a knack for drawing contact and creating space, and as a rebounder he has a nose for the ball, finishing with a game-high eight rebounds.
Larry Taylor (2012, North Port)
A heady point guard with a savvy game, Taylor, along with help from Central Florida signee Kasey Wilson, kept North Port in the game against Christ the King. Taylor only hit 1-of-5 from three, but he was 9-of-13 from inside the arc and shot 6-of-7 from the line for a game-high 27 points. He also had a game-high six steals to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
Adonis Burbage (2011, Orlando Christian Prep)
This slender wing scorer played the lead role in Orlando Christian Prep's 70-62 win over Riverside Academy. A midlevel prospect, Burbage is a savvy scorer who can catch and shoot or work his way into the midrange off the dribble. He had a game-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting, 2-of-2 from three and 2-of-3 from the line.
Ricardo Gathers (2012, Riverside Academy)
Just too strong for Orlando Christian Prep, Gathers put up a solid line of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Gathers hit 8 of his 14 field goal attempts.
