Cincinnati made a nice score when it landed three-star big man Nysier Brooks from the class of 2016 on Tuesday night. They upped the ante Wednesday, landing four-star wing Jarron Cumberland and N.C. State transfer Kyle Washington.
Currently ranked the No. 65 player in the class of 2016, Cumberland tweeted out Wednesday morning that he was off the board and he has long been a major target of the Bearcats.
At 6-foot-4 and around 215 pounds, Cumberland is one of the most physically strong and tough shooting guards in the class of 2016. While his strength stands out, the product of Wilmington (Ohio) High is also a pretty skilled player and a scoring machine on the high school level.
Cumberland is very adapt at using the dribble and his body to create space. He has a strong mid range game with an assortment of floaters and pull-up jumpers, finishes through contact at the rim and he can shoot to beyond the three point line. Cumberland is not blazing quick and his shot selection is a bit iffy at times, but he is a guy that should be able to come in and score right away on the college level.
A 6-foot-8 center from Burlington (N.J.) Life Center Academy, Brooks is a strong and tough insider who will really take off in a college weight room. Mostly a garbage and effort type scorer around the rim who is happy with the occasional dump off or offensive rebound, Brooks is a grinding big man who does the dirty work as a rebounder and a positional defender.
Finally, Washington is a 6-foot-9 forward who gives the Bearcats some Octavious Ellis insurance. Because of his experience, Washington should be ready to step in and help as a scorer and rebounder after Ellis departs. Washington averaged 6.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in Raleigh as a sophomore and will sit out the 2015-16 season before finishing his remaining two years of eligibility.
