Carmona Loses Appeal

The Ohio High School Athletic Association denied 6-5, 210 pound small forward Alex Carmona's (right) appeal to be eligible for interscholastic athletics this year for Troy (OH) High School.
The OHSAA Board of Control voted 7-0 to uphold Commissioner Clair Muscaro's Sept. 21 decision that Carmona didn't meet any of the exceptions found in the OHSAA bylaws to gain eligibility. The vote was recorded in the minutes of the Oct. 18 Board of Control meeting in Columbus.

Carmona, an 18-year-old Puerto Rican native, lived the past two school years with Curt and Deb Grant, his legal guardians. A second-team All-Ohio selection who averaged 26.9 points and 12.9 rebounds last season, Carmona now lives with and works for a Troy businessman.
The ruling apparently disregarded Carmona's request to be declared "emancipated" even though that option was discussed as a option by the Commission.
Carmona's attorney denied comment since he had yet to receive the written ruling from the state.
