Business as usual for Mater Dei

THE RIVALS150: 2015 | 2016

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- On the second day of the Maxpreps Holiday Classic, a new look Mater Dei squad established that they are still a squad to be reckoned with. Cody Riley turned up the energy when his Sierra Canyon squad needed it the most and Bryce Peters continued to establish himself as one to watch on the West Coast in 2016.
Mater Dei continues to roll along
Gone is star Stanley Johnson and gone is Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei's 46-game winning streak. But, legendary coach Gary McKnight's squad is still stocked with talent and a major threat to win a fifth straight state title in California. The Monarchs are also looking like a threat to win the Holiday Classic after dispatching Hayward (Calif.) Moreau Catholic on Saturday night to earn a semifinal berth.
Though they don't have a national top five talent like Johnson, the Monarchs still have plenty of firepower and their leader is senior shooting guard Rex Pflueger. Headed to Notre Dame (who had an assistant on hand), the No. 98 player in the class of 2015 looks to be benefiting from playing a more central role. A good athlete and very good on-the-ball defender, Pflueger is relied upon for a lot of ball-handling and he looks more comfortable with his jumper than he did last summer.
Down in the post, junior M.J. Cage continues to develop. A 6-foot-9 center with long arms, Cage is a model of efficiency on the block. He keeps the ball high, uses his long arms to reach over defenders for offensive rebounds and seems to have a knack for beating other bigs up the floor for dunks. On Saturday night, Cage stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 21 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. San Diego State still appears to be the team to beat but Arizona's Sean Miller, USC's Andy Enfield and an assistant from Washington were on hand to keep tabs on 2016's No. 36 player.
Also helping out is senior combo guard Lavette Parker. A 6-foot-1 shooter, Parker is pure from deep when he gets his feet set and plays with toughness. Finally, freshman power forward Michael Wang looks like a pretty skilled post player to keep an eye on down the road.
Riley gives Sierra Canyon a burst
Late in the third quarter of their quarterfinal game with Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany, Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon was scuffling to get to the next round. Alemany had the momentum and Sierra Canyon's star sophomore Cody Riley was sitting on the bench in foul trouble.
That all changed in the fourth quarter, though. Riley made his return to the floor and the 6-foot-7 power forward's energy and physicality helped to change the game. The No. 10 player in 2017 beasted around the rim for dunks, took control of the glass and had a big shot block as his teammates starting hitting shots of their own and turned up the defensive pressure.
Already a strong kid, Riley has gotten even stronger since the summer and he is a load in the low post. His jumper was a bit hit-and-miss, but it was good to see him accept the challenge of turning the game around and do so by being the strongest player in the paint. Arizona's Sean Miller was looking on as was USC's Andy Enfield and both programs along with the likes of Kansas have given early offers.
Peters taking next step
Things are falling into place nicely for 6-foot-2 junior combo guard Bryce Peters of La Verne (Calif.) Damien. A high-end athlete with tremendous end-to-end speed, the three-star prospect is learning to blend his speed with skill and as a result he is taking his game to a new, high-major, level even though he's still not quite 100 percent.
"I think I've improved off of my defense," Peters said. "I just came off an injury, I fractured my foot, so I'm trying to get my conditioning back up. Communication wise, I'm trying to be a leader and a coach on the floor."
Capable of playing at either the one or the two, Peters sees himself as a point guard on the college level and is keeping an eye on that when it comes to his recruitment.
So far, he lists offers from Arizona State, Wyoming, UTEP, Utah State, Pepperdine and San Francisco while USC (Andy Enfield watched Saturday) keeps close tabs on him.
A nice find on Saturday was Milwaukee (Wisc.) Rufus King combo guard Jordan PooleClick The difference between Mableton (Ga.) The No. 71 player in the class of 2016, Frayer still needs to add more strength but he is rounding out his game a bit. Always known for his athleticism, Frayer is actually even a bit more explosive off the floor and can be a big time finisher on the fast break. He's also gotten better using two or three quick dribbles to get to the rim and he is a more willing jump shooter. His form is a bit inconsistent and it will be an area for him to continue to work on. The biggest thing for Frayer is learning to use his athleticism and length on the defensive end.
