Morgan County (Ga.) point guard Tookie Brown decided during his junior year that he wanted to end his recruitment early and commit to Mississippi State. Brown never wavered after making that decision and signed with the Bulldogs back in November.
Last month, however, Mississippi State made a decision that surprised many and cut ties with head coach Rick Ray, to whom Brown committed to play. Ben Howland was quickly hired as Ray's replacement in Starkville, but Brown decided he wanted to open his recruitment back up and ask for his release.
And on Tuesday afternoon, Mississippi State granted Brown an unconditional release, according to his high school coach Jamond Sims.
A three-star point guard, Brown is one of the more prolific scorers in the history of Georgia high school basketball, scoring over 3,000 points in his time at Morgan County. As a junior, he helped the Bulldogs win the AAA state championship and went for 38 points in the championship game. He finished just short of repeating this year as Morgan County suffered a close loss in the championship to Jenkins High School, but Brown was once again terrific during the state tournament.
Sims believes somebody is going to be very happy they sign Brown.
"Someone is going to get a steal," Sims said.
Look for Brown to be a highly sought after prospect now that he's back on the market. Despite being undersized by college point guard standards at 5-foot-10, Brown makes up for it with his toughness and ability to make plays for himself and others.
