CHARLOTTE -- Had he wanted to, three-star center Nysier Brooks could have waited to make his college choice and picked up plenty of interest during the month of July. Instead, the powerful big man found the perfect school and coach fit in Cincinnati and Mick Cronin.
A 6-foot-9, 240-pound center from the west side of Philadelphia who plays his high school ball at Burlington (N.J.) Life Center, Brooks said at the Under Armour All-America Camp Powered by Rivals.com that there was no need to stretch out his decision.
"I always said that I would commit when I found a spot that I fit in and where I felt I could be a force on the court," Brooks said. "At Cincinnati, it is just like the things that are within me are within the program. They play hard, they are tough and they have something to prove to everybody. When I took my official visit, I met with the players and they made me feel like I was wanted and so did the coaches."
Brooks plays a low post game that is built on being physical, being tough and doing many of the things others don't want to. He likes setting screens, he pounds the glass and if needed, he's not afraid to send a message on the floor.
"I just have to prove that you don't always have to score and stuff like that to be a force," Brooks said. "You can just work hard. I embrace being the lunch pail guy and being an enforcer."
While he loves to do the dirty work, Brooks is working hard to improve his all-around game and says that he'd like to expand his range some and develop go-to moves on either side of the lane. He's willing to work hard and ultimately that's what attracted his future coach to him.
"Coach Cronin likes my work ethic," said Brooks. "He likes how hard I work and how I hustle and that should be a good fit."
