Brooklynite Leaves ACC For Big Ten

J.C. Mathis, the 6-8, 224 pound power forward from Brooklyn, NY, has transferred from Viriginia to Michigan. He chose the Wolverines over Rutgers, Penn and West Virginia.
Mathis told Chris Balas of our affiliate The Wolverine, "There is an opportunity to play right away, and I'm going to try to help this team out and get things turned around."

The Brooklyn-native averaged 4.9 points and 4.0 rebounds for the Cavaliers last season. He started 20 games but saw his playing time dwindle as the season progressed. He averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds a game as a freshman.
Mathis told New York Post reporter Dan Martin, "Tommy Amaker came after me hard when I was a senior. But he was at Seton Hall and I didn't think that was the right place for me. But I really liked him then and I remembered him well. I'm looking forward to playing for him."
He prepped at John F. Kennedy High School where he averaged 17.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, four blocked shots and 3.5 assists a game as a senior. Mathis was a first-team All-City selection and led Kennedy (28-3) to both the Bronx championship and the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) title.
