Brandon Brooks Leaves JUCO

On Tuesday, Brandon Brooks might have found a new college to attend. By Wednesday night, he was looking for a new JUCO.
Brooks, the gifted 6-0, 180 pound point guard from Portland, Ore., was dismissed from the Indian Hills C.C. basketball program on Wednesday by Head Coach Lorenzo Watkins, just 24 hours after reportedly making a verbal commitment to Iowa State.

Brooks was asked to leave for what Watkins termed as "disciplinary reasons."
"It's one of those things you deal with everyday, but it comes to a point where it all comes to a halt," Watkins said. "Where no kid is bigger than your program."
Back in November, Brooks told JUCO Junction/Rivalshoops.com that he planned to sign with Southern Cal. But he apparently had a change of heart, and on Tuesday, the Ottumwa Courier reported that Brooks had instead committed to Iowa State.
When contacted on Wednesday by JUCO Junction, Watkins said he was unaware of the commitment.
"I did not know anything about it to be honest," Watkins said. "Our guys were saying that he committed there, and I found out yesterday when it was in our paper. He must have told them that because he is quoted in that paper."
Watkins said he was unsure of where Brooks might attend school, but said he felt that he still had a chance to graduate and move on to a Division I school next fall.
Brooks has missed much of this season with a knee injury, and was planning to sit out the rest of the year and enroll at a Division I school with three years to play. He had knee surgery over the summer, but according to Watkins, the knee never healed properly.
Brooks is hoping to be granted a medical red-shirt for this year, since he only played in a handful of games for the Warriors.
Watkins said that USC Asst. Coach Kurtis Townsend was in Ottumwa on Monday to take a look at Brooks, yet Brandon did not inform them of his plans to commit to Iowa State, the coach said.
So when the news hit the wires on Tuesday, Watkins was as surprised as anyone. He and Brooks met yesterday to discuss some issues, with the end result being that Brooks won't be back at the Iowa junior college.
"It was a mutual thing," Watkins said. "You don't have that many lives with one person."
One of Indian Hills' other sophomores, 7-1 center Chris Alexander, signed early with the Cyclones. The earliest that Brooks would be able to sign with ISU would be in April, when the spring signing period gets under way.
Watkins said that as of this morning, he had not yet informed the Iowa State coaching staff of Brooks' situation.
Brooks was headed back home to Portland, so perhaps he will enroll at a local community college there and finish out his degree.
Whatever the case, JUCO Junction/Rivalshoops.com will keep you posted, so stay tuned.
